My Song Forever Shall Record

Hymnal: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #89B (2018) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 My song forever shall record the tender mercies of the Lord; your faithfulness will I proclaim, and ev'ry age shall know your name. 2 I sing of mercies that endure, forever builded firm and sure, of faithfulness that never dies, established changeless in the skies. 3 Behold God's truth and grace displayed, for he has faithful cov'nant made, and he has sworn that David's son shall ever sit upon his throne. 4 "For him my mercy shall endure, my cov'nant made with him is sure; his throne and race I will maintain forever, while the heav'ns remain." 5 Almighty God, your lofty throne has justice for its cornerstone, and shining bright before your face are truth and love and boundless grace. 6 With blessing is the nation crowned whose people know the joyful sound; they in the light, O Lord, shall live, the light your face and favor give. 7 Your name with gladness they confess, exalted in your righteousness; their fame and might to you belong, for in your favor they are strong. 8 All glory unto God we yield, the Lord God is our help and shield; all praise and honor we will bring to Israel's Holy One, our King. 9 Blest be the Lord forevermore, whose promise stands from days of yore. His word is faithful now as then; blest be his name. Amen! Amen! Topics: Christ Kingdom of; Covenant of Grace; God Mercy of; Promises Scripture: Psalm 89 Languages: English Tune Title: MARYTON

My Song Forever Shall Record

Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns to the Living God #89 (2023) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 My song forever shall record the tender mercies of the LORD; Thy faithfulness will I proclaim, and every age shall know Thy name. 2 I sing of mercies that endure, forever builded firm and sure, of faithfulness that never dies, established changeless in the skies. 3 Behold God's truth and grace displayed, for He has faithful cov'nant made, and He has sworn that David's son shall ever sit upon His throne. 4 The heav'ns shall join in glad accord to praise Thy wondrous works, O LORD; Thy faithfulness shall praise command where holy ones assembled stand. 5 The heav'ns and earth, by right divine, the world and all therein, are Thine; the whole creation's wondrous frame proclaim its Maker's glorious Name. 6 In vision to His saints God spake: "From out the people one I take, a mighty leader, true and brave, ordained, exalted, strong to save. 7 Yea, he shall triumph in My Name, and great shall be his pow'r and fame, from sea to sea his mighty hand shall hold dominion o'er the land." 8 "For him My mercy shall endure, My cov'nant made with him is sure, his throne and race I will maintain forever, while the heav'ns remain." 9 On Thy anointed wrath is poured as if Thy cov'nant were abhorred; Thou hast profaned his kingly crown, his matchless strength is broken down. 10 Where are Thy mercies which of old were in Thy promises foretold? Remember, Lord, the bitter shame heaped on Thy own anointed's name. 11 Blest be the LORD for evermore, whose promise stands from days of yore. His word is faithful now as then; blest be His Name. Amen. Amen. Topics: Supplication Scripture: Psalm 89 Languages: English Tune Title: KEDRON

Michael Praetorius

1571 - 1621 Adapter of "PUER NOBIS NASCITUR" in Glory to God Born into a staunchly Lutheran family, Michael Praetorius (b. Creuzburg, Germany, February 15, 1571; d. Wolfenbüttel, Germany, February 15, 1621) was educated at the University of Frankfort-an-der-Oder. In 1595 he began a long association with Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick, when he was appointed court organist and later music director and secretary. The duke resided in Wolfenbüttel, and Praetorius spent much of his time at the court there, eventually establishing his own residence in Wolfenbüttel as well. When the duke died, Praetorius officially retained his position, but he spent long periods of time engaged in various musical appointments in Dresden, Magdeburg, and Halle. Praetorius produced a prodigious amount of music and music theory. His church music consists of over one thousand titles, including the sixteen-volume Musae Sionae (1605-1612), which contains Lutheran hymns in settings ranging from two voices to multiple choirs. His Syntagma Musicum (1614-1619) is a veritable encyclopedia of music and includes valuable information about the musical instruments of his time. Bert Polman

George Ratcliffe Woodward

1848 - 1934 Harmonizer of "PUER NOBIS NASCITUR" in Glory to God Educated at Caius College in Cambridge, England, George R. Woodward (b. Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, 1848; d. Highgate, London, England, 1934) was ordained in the Church of England in 1874. He served in six parishes in London, Norfolk, and Suffolk. He was a gifted linguist and translator of a large number of hymns from Greek, Latin, and German. But Woodward's theory of translation was a rigid one–he held that the translation ought to reproduce the meter and rhyme scheme of the original as well as its contents. This practice did not always produce singable hymns; his translations are therefore used more often today as valuable resources than as congregational hymns. With Charles Wood he published three series of The Cowley Carol Book (1901, 1902, 1919), two editions of Songs of Syon (1904, 1910), An Italian Carol Book (1920), and the Cambridge Carol Book
