W. P. Mackay

1839 - 1885 Person Name: William Paton Mackay (1839-1885) Author of "Louvamos-Te, ó Deus" in Louvores ao Rei Mackay, William Paton, M.D., was born at Montrose, May 13, 1839, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. After following his medical profession for a time, he became minister of Prospect Street Presbyterian Church, Hull, in 1868, and died from an accident, at Portree, Aug. 22, 1885. Seventeen of his hymns are in W. Reid's Praise Book, 1872. Of these the best known is "We praise Thee, O God, for the Son of Thy love" (Praise to God), written 1863, recast 1867. [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix II (1907) ====================== Born: May 13, 1839, Montrose, Scotland. Died: August 22, 1885, Portree, Scotland, of an accident. Mackay graduated from the University of Edinburgh and initially worked as a doctor. However, he was ordained, and in 1868 became pastor of the Prospect Street Presbyterian Church in Hull. He married Mary Loughton Livingstone 1868 in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire; they were living in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, as of 1881. Seventeen of his hymns appeared in W. Reid’s Praise Book in 1872. 1760 - 1825 Person Name: John J. Husband (1760-1825) Composer of "[Louvamos-Te, ó Deus]" in Louvores ao Rei Rv John Jenkins Husband United Kingdom 1760-1825. Born in Plymouth, England, he worked as a clerk at Surrey Chapel. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1809 and taught music in Philadelphia, PA. It is surmised that he married Anna Elizabeth Kirkhum, but no other family information was found. An author and composer, he also worked as a clerk at St. Paul’s Protestant Episcopal Church. In 1807 he published “A collection of hymns & Psalms for the use of singing school & musical societies”. He died in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

James Theodore Houston

1847 - 1929 Person Name: James Theodore Houston, 1847-1929 Translator of "Louvamos-te, ó Deus" in Hinário para o Culto Cristão Born in 1847. He was a missionary in Bahia, Brazil under the Presbyterian Board of New York, he later was transferred to Rio de Janeiro. He collaborated on the hymnal Hinos e Cânticos Sagrados published by John Boyle in Rio de Janeiro, 1888. After 28 years of ministry, he returned to the United States and died in Oakland, CA at the age of 82.
