James Russell Lowell

1819 - 1891 Person Name: Jac. Lowell Hymnal Number: 191 Author of "June Joy" in His Worthy Praise Lowell, James Russell, LL.D., was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 22, 1819; graduated at Harvard College, 1838, and was called to the Bar in 1840. Professor of Modern Languages and Literature (succeeding the Poet Longfellow) in Harvard, 1855; American Minister to Spain, also to England in 1881. He was editor of the Atlantic Monthly, from 1857 to 1862; and of the North American Review from 1863 to 1872. Professor Lowell is the most intellectual of American poets, and first of her art critics and humorists. He has written much admirable moral and sacred poetry, but no hymns. One piece, “Men, whose boast it is that ye" (Against Slavery), is part of an Anti-Slavery poem, and in its present form is found in Hymns of the Spirit, 1864. Carrie Ellis Breck

1855 - 1934 Person Name: Mrs. Frank A. Breck Hymnal Number: 181 Author of "Jesus is Victor" in His Worthy Praise Carrie Ellis Breck was born 22 January 1855 in Vermont and raised in a Christian home. She later moved to Vineland, New Jersy, and then to Portland, Oregon. She wrote verse and prose for religious and household publications, In 1884 she married Frank A. Breck. She has written between fourteen and fifteen hundred hymns. 1851 - 1920 Hymnal Number: 42 Author of "Beautiful Words of Jesus" in His Worthy Praise Pseudonym: Lidie H. Edmunds. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was born in Philadelphia 28 June 1851. She was educated in the public schools and after graduation from high school became a teacher. However, she developed a spinal malady which cut short her career and made her a shut-in for many years. During her convalescence, she studied English literature. She felt a need to be useful to her church and began writing poems for the primary department. she went on to teach Sunday school, take an active part in the Philadelphia Elementary Union and become Superintendent of the primary department of Calvin Presbyterian Church. John Burton

1773 - 1822 Hymnal Number: 52 Author of "Holy Bible" in His Worthy Praise Burton, John, born 1773, in Nottingham, where he resided until 1813, when he removed to Leicester, at which town he died in 1822. He was a Baptist, a very earnest Sunday School teacher, and one of the compilers of the Nottingham Sunday School Union Hymn Book, 1812. This book reached the 20th edition in 1861. The 1st edition contains 43 hymns which have his signature. He is known almost exclusively by one hymn, "Holy Bible, book divine" (q.v.). He was also author of The Youth's Monitor, and other similar productions for the young. Robert Hall wrote a recommendatory preface to one of his works. [Rev. W. R. Stevenson, M. Died: July 8, 1951, Arden, West Virginia. Buried: Ebenezer Methodist Church, Arden, West Virginia. Reed is said to have written 2,000 hymns in her lifetime.
