W. S. Weeden

1847 - 1908 Hymnal Number: 123 Composer of "[Have you heard the voice of Jesus]" in Songs of Christian Service Winfield S. Weeden was born in 1847 in Middleport, OH. In his early life he was active in teaching singing schools throughout that area in Ohio. As singer and associate to Judson VandeVenter in his evangelistic campaigns, Weeden assisted in meetings at East Palestine and Sebring. He compiled several collections of hymns among them The Peacemaker, Songs of the Peacemaker, and Songs of Sovereign Grace. Weeden died in 1908. Marian Wendell Hubbard

Person Name: Marian W. Hubbard Hymnal Number: 89 Author of "The Touch of Jesus" in Songs of Christian Service Marian Wendell Hubbard was sent to be educated in Pawtuckett, Rhode Island at the age of nine, after the death of her mother. At the age of eighteen she worked in Philadelphia as a proof reader. At this time she also wrote articles and poetry for publication. She wrote hymns for an Elgin, Illinois publisher. Hymnal Number: 49 Author of "Let the Blessed Sunlight In" in Songs of Christian Service Augustus (Gus) Franklin Myers USA 1850-1902. Born at Ashland, OH, he was a music composer and publisher. He may have taught music, as his title of ‘Professor’, is noted by one source. His song books include: “The life line”, “The search light” (1894), “The seed sower” (1897). S. Y. Harmer

1809 - 1884 Person Name: Rev. S. G. Harmer Hymnal Number: 136 Author of "Rest for the Weary" in Songs of Christian Service Harmer, Samuel Young, son of Samuel Harmer, a member of the Society of Friends, was born at Germantown, Pennsylvania, Dec. 9, 1809. In 1827 he joined the American Methodist Episcopalian Church, and was engaged for several years as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. In 1842 he became a local preacher of that body, and, in 1847, was admitted into the ministry. He has held appointments in Philadelphia and Iowa. His well-known hymn "In the Christian's home in glory" (Heaven) was written in 1856 for a camp-meeting collection which the Rev. John Gladding was then compiling. It has been slightly altered, and set to music by the Rev. W. McDonald of Boston, Massachusetts. (For these details we are indebted to Dr. Hatfield's Poets of the Church N. Birdie Bell

Hymnal Number: 23 Author of "Jesus Understands!" in Songs of Christian Service C. Louise Bell, also known a Birdie Bell, was born, raised and lived in New York city. She began writing hymns when she was sixteen years old. She is the author of more than 500 hymns, 200 religious poems, and 200 Christmas and Easter lyrics, as well as short stories, and articles. She wrote under the name of Birdie Bell, which is what her family called her. W. G. Fischer

1835 - 1912 Person Name: William G. Fischer Hymnal Number: 141 Composer of "[Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole]" in Songs of Christian Service William Gustavus Fischer In his youth, William G. Fischer (b. Baltimore, MD, 1835; d. Philadelphia, PA, 1912) developed an interest in music while attending singing schools. His career included working in the book bindery of J. B. Lippencott Publishing Company, teaching music at Girard College, and co-owning a piano business and music store–all in Philadelphia. Fischer eventually became a popular director of music at revival meetings and choral festivals. In 1876 he conducted a thousand-voice choir at the Dwight L. Moody/Ira D. Sankey revival meeting in Philadelphia. Fischer composed some two hundred tunes for Sunday school hymns and gospel songs. Bert Polman

Flora Kirkland

1862 - 1911 Hymnal Number: 123 Author of "The Inner Circle" in Songs of Christian Service Flora Kirkland was born in 1862 in Kentucky, before moving to Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from school she became a public school teacher for the seventh grade. She was a member of Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church for which she wrote a number of hymns. She was very active in the Wallabout Bay Mission in that neighborhood of Brooklyn. Most of Wallabout Bay would be filled in to make way for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She died 17 January 1911. E. E. Hewitt

1851 - 1920 Hymnal Number: 93 Author of "Will there be Any Stars?" in Songs of Christian Service Pseudonym: Lidie H. Edmunds. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was born in Philadelphia 28 June 1851. She was educated in the public schools and after graduation from high school became a teacher. However, she developed a spinal malady which cut short her career and made her a shut-in for many years. During her convalescence, she studied English literature. She felt a need to be useful to her church and began writing poems for the primary department. she went on to teach Sunday school, take an active part in the Philadelphia Elementary Union and become Superintendent of the primary department of Calvin Presbyterian Church.
