J. Howard Entwisle

1865 - 1901 Hymnal Number: 139 Composer of "[Just one touch as he moves along]" in Bright Melodies J Howard Entwisle USA 1865-1901. Born in PA, he became a musician and songbook editor-compiler in Philadelphia, PA, in the 1890s. He collaberated with William J Kirkpatrick, also of Philadelphia, promoting gospel songs. He helped compile “Songs of love and praise #4”, then later “Songs of love and praise #5”. Other published works were: “Bright melodies” (1899), “Heavenly sunlight” (1900), “Exalted praise” (1901). Alfred Tennyson, Baron Tennyson

1809 - 1892 Person Name: Alfred Tennyson Hymnal Number: 89 Author of "Crossing the Bar" in Bright Melodies Tennyson, Alfred, Lord, son of the Rev. G. C. Tennyson, Rector of Somersby, Lincolnshire, was born at Somersby, Aug. 6, 1809; educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; appointed Poet Laureate in 1850, and raised to the Peerage in 1884. Although Lord Tennyson has not written any hymns, extracts from his poems are sometimes used as such, as "Strong Son of God, immortal Love" (Faith in the Son of God), from the Introduction to his In Memoriam, 1850; the well-known "Too late, too late, ye cannot enter now," and others. The former is sometimes given as "Spirit of immortal Love," and again as "Eternal God, immortal Love." --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)

1782 - 1850 Person Name: Charles Meineke Hymnal Number: 5a Composer of "[Glory be to the Father, and to the Son]" in Bright Melodies Meineke (1782-1850) is referred to by several given names including C., Charles, Christopher, Christoph, and Karl. Meineke apparently left Germany in 1810 and, after spending some time in England, moved to the United States, settling in Baltimore, Maryland, by 1822. He was organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore in 1836, likely serving in this position for some eight years. Meineke published several works including "Music for the Church: Containing Sixty-two Psalm and Hymn Tunes in Four Parts: Together with Chants, Doxologies and Responses for Morning and Evening Prayer, and Holy Communion: Composed for the Use of the Choir of St. Paul's Church, Baltimore" (Baltimore, 1844).
