O Jesus, som har elsket mig

O Jesus, som har elsket mig

Representative Text

1 O Jesus, som har elsket mig,
Ja med saa overmaade
Aldeles ubegribelig
En Kjærlighed og Naade,
O, tænd mit Hjerte op igjen
Med Kjærlighedens Iver,
At jeg giver
Mig ganske til dig hen,
Og altid hos dig bliver!

2 Det var din Hjertens Kjærlighed,
Der bragte mig den Naade,
At du for mine Synder led
Den haade Dødsens Vaade.
Ak, maatte jeg din Pines Sag,
De dybe Naadens Grunde
Saa tilstunde,
At Sjælen Nat og Dag
Til dig opløftes kunde!

3 Min Trøst, mit Lys, min bedste Ven
Og største Lyst i Livet,
O hav mig, tag mig ganske hen!
Dig har jeg mig hengivet;
Thi uden dig er Verden mørk,
Et Fængsel kun at kalde,
Gift og Galde,
Et øde Sted, en Ørk,
Hvor tunge Taarer falde.

4 Men du er Sjælens trygge Havn
Mod alle Modgangs Vinde,
Ak lad mig i din Naades Favn
Den rette Hvile finde!
Din Kjærlighed som Sol i Vaar
Den kolde Is fortære,
Balsam være
For mine Syndesaar,
Som mig saa hart besvære!

5 Den samme trøste mig i Trang,
I Sygdoms Tid mig styrke,
Og naar jeg endelig en Gang
Skal ind i Dødens Mørke,
Da lad den lyse op min Sti,
Og stande ved min Side,
Med mig stride!
Saa gaar jeg frelst og fri
Fra hele Verdens Kvide.

Lubben, Germany, 1676), famous author of Lutheran evangelical hymns, studied theology and hymnody at the University of Wittenberg and then was a tutor in Berlin, where he became friends with Johann Crüger. He served the Lutheran parish of Mittenwalde near Berlin (1651-1657) and the great St. Nicholas' Church in Berlin (1657-1666). Friederich William, the Calvinist elector, had issued an edict that forbade the various Protestant groups to fight each other. Although Gerhardt did not want strife between the churches, he refused to comply with the edict because he thought it opposed the Lutheran "Formula of Concord," which condemned some Calvinist doctrines.
