I Never Knew You

Author: Elizabeth A. Needham Appears in 9 hymnals First Line: When the King in His beauty shall come to His throne Refrain First Line: I have never known you Lyrics: 1. When the King in His beauty shall come to His throne, And around Him are gathered His loved ones, His own; There be some who will knock at His fair palace door, To be answered within, There is mercy no more. Refrain I have never known you, I have never known you, I have never, I have never, I have never known you. 2. They had known whence He came, and the grace which He brought; In their presence He healed, in their streets He had taught; They had mentioned His name and their friendship professed; But they never believed, for of them He confessed: [Refrain] 3. Now the righteous are reigning with Abraham there; But for these is appointed an endless despair; It is vain that they call: He once knocked at their gate, But they welcomed Him not; so now this is their fate: [Refrain] 4. O sinner, give heed to this story of gloom, For the hour is fast nearing that fixes your doom; Will you still reject mercy? still harden your heart? Oh, then, what will you do as the King cries, Depart! [Refrain] Used With Tune: [When the King in His beauty shall come to His throne] Text Sources: Gospel Hymns No. 4, by Ira D. Sankey et al. (New York: John Church/Biglow & Main Company, 1881)

1843 - 1918 Person Name: Charles Clinton Case Composer of "[When the King in His beauty shall come to His throne]" in The Cyber Hymnal Charles Clinton Case USA 1843-1918. Born in Linesville, PA, his family moved to Gustavus, OH, when he was four. His father was an accomplished violinist, but a neighbor gave him a small violin when he was nine, and he mastered it before he could read music. At age 16 he went to singing school (without parental consent), borrowing the money from a neighbor. C. A. Bentley, a prominent conductor, was his first vocal music instructor, and William Bradbury's “Jubilee” was the school textbook. For three winters in a row, he attended Bentley's singing school, working his father's farm in the summer. He married Annie Williams. In 1866 he studied music in Boston with B. F. Baker. He also studied under George Root, Horatio Palmer, Philip Bliss, George Webb, and others, hymnwriters in their own right. Soon after, Case began teaching music, and when James McGranahan moved two miles from his home, they became friends. Case wrote and edited a number of Gospel song books in his life. 6 works.
