1839 - 1929 Person Name: Rev. E. A. Hoffman Author of "He Chastens But in Love" in Gathered Jewels No. 2 Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929) after graduating from Union Seminary in Pennsylvania was ordained in 1868. As a minister he was appointed to the circuit in Napoleon, Ohio in 1872. He worked with the Evangelical Association's publishing arm in Cleveland for eleven years. He served in many chapels and churches in Cleveland and in Grafton in the 1880s, among them Bethel Home for Sailors and Seamen, Chestnut Ridge Union Chapel, Grace Congregational Church and Rockport Congregational Church. In his lifetime he wrote more than 2,000 gospel songs including"Leaning on the everlasting arms" (1894). The fifty song books he edited include Pentecostal Hymns No. 1 and The Evergreen, 1873.

1852 - 1885 Composer of "[When life is full of bitter grief]" in Gathered Jewels No. 2 Born: September 27, 1852, Knox County, Ohio.
Died: March 13, 1885, Aberdeen, Mississippi.
Buried: Disney Cemetery, Five Corners, Ohio.
Son of Frederick and Harriet Barry Disney, and brother to Henry Disney, Jacob was educated in the local district school. He later attended the normal school under Professor John Ogden, in Worthing, Ohio, for almost a year. In the summer of 1879 he went to the Musical Normal school in Youngstown, Ohio, under Professor N. Coe Stewart, of Cleveland, Ohio. He studied music for some years, and composed Willie’s Farewell, published in 1877, making him the first resident of Knox County, Ohio, to write lyrics and music for a published song.
