I will not fear When God, my Shield, is ever near. 2 Though thousands at my side may fall, Ten thousand near me stumble, On Thee, my Saviour, will I call, Thou carest for the humble. I will not fear the arrow's flight, Nor yet the dark night's terror: Thy saints are precious in Thy sight, Thou keepest them from error, For Thou hast sent Thine angels bright to guard my tent. 3 "He loveth Me," thus saith the Lord, "Therefore will I uphold him; Because he waits upon My Word, With love will I enfold him. His enemies shall rage in vain, No evil shall come near him; His prayers with Me acceptance gain, Before he calls, I'll hear him. His days I'll bless With joy, and peace, and righteousness." Amen. Johan Olof Wallin

1779 - 1839 Based on of "O Blessed Is the Man Who Stays" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Johan Olaf Wallin was born at Stora Tuna, in 1779, and early displayed his poetical powers. In 1805, and again in 1809, he gained the chief prize for poetry at Upsala. In the latter year he became pastor at Solna; here his ability as a preacher was so striking that he was transferred to Stockholm, in 1815, as "pastor primarius," a title for which we have no exact equivalent. In 1818 he was made Dean of Westeras, and set about the task of editing a revised hymn-book for the whole of Sweden. This task he completed in 1819, and published it as, Den Swenska Psalmboken, af Konungen gillad och stadfästad (The Swedish hymn-book, approved and confirmed by the King). To it he contributed some 150 hymns of his own, besides translations and recastings; and the book remains now in the form in which he brought it out. It is highly prized by the Swedes, and is in use everywhere. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, p. 1000 (1907)

Ernest Edwin Ryden

1886 - 1981 91st Pslam, paraphrased by of "O Blessed Is the Man Who Stays" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Ernest Edwin Ryden is a distinguished Lutheran clergyman who has been a life-long student of hymns. At present he is pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church in North Grosvenordale, Connecticut. This is the latest of a long series of services he has rendered in the Lutheran Church. For twenty-seven years he was editor of "The Lutheran Companion," the official organ of the former Augustana Lutheran Church. His contributions to hymnody were many. He was a member of the Committee which created the Augustana Hymnal of 1925 to which he contributed eight original hymns and translations. He was co-editor of the Junior Hymnal for which he wrote a number of hymns. He was secretary of the committee which prepared the Service Book and Hymnal. Here again he has contributed new hymns and translations. He is the author of two volumes, "The Story of Our Hymns," and "The Story of Christian Hymnody." In 1949 he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of the North Star by the King of Sweden for his work in the field of hymnological research. He is the author of one of the Children's Hymns published by the Hymn Society. ----Twelve New Lord’s Day Hymns, 1968.
