Lo! a Mighty Army

Author: Rev. H. G. Jackson Hymnal: The Old Story in Song #128 (1906) First Line: Lo! a mighty army now assembling Refrain First Line: Forward, ye soldiers of Jesus Lyrics: 1 Lo! a mighty army now assembling, Rallying to the cross, a mighty band, Bold to strive against the pow’rs of evil, Sworn to do or die at God’s command. Refrain: Forward, ye soldiers of Jesus, With his banner o’er you. Charge the foe before you; Valiantly follow your Captain, Till the fight with sin is o’er; Forward, ye soldiers of Jesus, Faithful to your calling, Tho’ in battle falling, Ye shall with Jesus victorious Reign in glory evermore. 2 Marshalled league of eager, youthful soldiers, Girth with truth they bear the Spirit’s sword, Shield of faith and helmet of salvation, Ready, waiting for the Captain’s word. [Refrain] 3 Fierce and long may be the direful conflict With the host of unbelief and sin, Falter not, but swift go forth to battle, Truth and right with God the fight will win. [Refrain] Tune Title: [Lo! a mighty army now assembling]

Chas. H. Gabriel

1856 - 1932 Composer of "[Lo! a mighty army now assembling]" in The Old Story in Song Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Gabriel's gospel songs became widely circulated through the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver urban crusades. Bert Polman

O. S. Grinnell

1826 - 1926 Arranger of "[Forward all, put on the gospel armor]" in Calvary's Praises Orlando S. Grinnell was better known as a preacher than a songwriter. Still, the Wayne pastor's single hymn was a hit, not for its timeless melody but for its title. In 1921, the minister wrote a hymn for his flock to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wayne Congregational Church. Grinnell titled it "The Little Home Church by the Wayside." http://articles.chicagotribune.com/199
