Theodore Baker

1851 - 1934 Translator of "While by the Sheep We Watched At Night" in Common Praise (1998) Theodore Baker (b. New York, NY, 1851; d. Dresden, Germany, 1934). Baker is well known as the compiler of Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (first ed. 1900), the first major music reference work that included American composers. Baker studied music in Leipzig, Germany, and wrote a dissertation on the music of the Seneca people of New York State–one of the first studies of the music of American Indians. From 1892 until his retirement in 1926, Baker was a literary editor and translator for G. Schirmer, Inc., in New York City. In 1926, he returned to Germany. Psalter Hymnal Handbook, 1987

Anonymous

Translator of "While by the Sheep we Watched at Night" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Hugo Jüngst

1853 - 1923 Arranger of "JUNGST" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Hugo Richard Jungst Germany 1853-1923. Born at Dresden, Germany, he came from an affluent, middle-class merchant family, his father owning a factory and warehouse for French millstones. He received early piano lessons at age seven, and entered the Royal Conservatory of Music in Dresden for a six-year program of study, specializing in piano and composition. He studied with famous names of the time. In 1876 he founded the Dresden Mannergesangverein (men’s choir), which he headed until 1903. He was appointed Koniglichen (royal music director), and in 1898 royal professoir of music. He was an author, composer, and arranger known for carols, anthems, and music scores. He received several rewards in his lifetime, and perfomed internationally in Europe and America. He died in Dresden John Perry

Small Church Music

Editors: Theodore Baker Description: The SmallChurchMusic site was launched in 2006, growing out of the requests from those struggling to provide suitable music for their services and meetings. Rev. Clyde McLennan was ordained in mid 1960’s and was a pastor in many small Australian country areas, and therefore was acutely aware of this music problem. Having also been trained as a Pipe Organist, recordings on site (which are a subset of the smallchurchmusic.com site) are all actually played by Clyde, and also include piano and piano with organ versions. All recordings are in MP3 format. Churches all around the world use the recordings, with downloads averaging over 60,000 per month. The recordings normally have an introduction, several verses and a slowdown on the last verse. Users are encouraged to use software: Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org) or Song Surgeon (http://songsurgeon.com) (see http://scm-audacity.weebly.com for more information) to adjust the MP3 number of verses, tempo and pitch to suit their local needs. Copyright notice: Rev. Clyde McLennan, performer in this collection, has assigned his performer rights in this collection to Hymnary.org. Non-commercial use of these recordings is permitted.
