I need a Hand to lead me

Author: Rev. E. Husband Appears in 3 hymnals First Line: I need a Hand to lead me thro' the darkness Refrain First Line: 'Tis all well! 'Tis all well Lyrics: 1 I need a Hand to lead me thro’ the darkness, For I am weak and helpless as a child; And if alone I have to take my journey, My feet must stumble on the mountains wild. Chorus: ‘Tis all well! ‘Tis all well! The Hand shall lead me thro’ the darkness! ‘Tis all well! ‘Tis all well! I’ll praise our God in songs of gladness! 2 I need a Friend that leads my heart’s deep secrets, That knows my sins, yet how I yearn for good How soon I fall, how easily I’m tempted, And yet that longs for Thee the most O God! [Chorus] 3 I need a place where such as I find welcome, Where sinners poor as I can enter in; Where stands the Fountain of the Love of Jesus, To cleanse me from the pow’r and guilt of sin. [Chorus] 4 I need a Home where change can never enter; I need a Land where weary souls can rest; Where I shall meet the friends that went before me, And death ne’er enter in its kingdom blest. [Chorus] 5 Where can I find a friend that never changes? A perfect peace all free from earthly leav’n? They both are one!—beyond the stars’ sweet shining! There is no Friend but God, no Home but Heav’n! [Chorus] Used With Tune: [I need a Hand to lead me thro' the darkness]

Edward Husband

1843 - 1908 Person Name: Rev. E. Husband Author of "I need a Hand to lead me" in Hymns of Consecration and Faith Husband, Edward was educated at St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he was successively Curate of Atherstone and Folkestone; and in 1878 Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Folkestone. In 1874 Mr. Husband published The Mission Hymnal, in which appeared his hymns as follows:— 1. Alas! poor world, I loved thee long. Rest in Jesus. 2. And dost Thou ask me, dearest Lord. Christ's Invitation, " Follow Me." 3. I must have Jesus only. Jesus only desired 4. Sweet Blood, dear ransom of our souls. The Blood of Jesus. These hymns are very simple, earnest, and impassioned: and bear a great resemblance to Facer's compositions. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
