Ernst W. Olson

1870 - 1958 Person Name: Ernst W. Olson, 1870-1958 Adapter of "Merciful Savior, Come and Be My Comfort" in Ambassador Hymnal Ernst W. Olson (b. Skane, Sweden, 1870; d. Chicago, IL, 1958) prepared the English translation for the 1925 Hymnal of the Lutheran Augustana Synod. As editor, writer, poet, and translator, Olson made a valuable contribution to Swedish-American culture and to church music. His family immigrated to Nebraska when he was five years old, but he spent much of his life in the Chicago area. Educated at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, he was editor of several Swedish-American newspapers and spent most of his professional career as an editor for the Augustana Book Concern (1911-1949). Olson wrote History of the Swedes in Illinois (1908). He also contributed four original hymns and twenty-eight translations to The Hymnal (1925) of the Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Synod and served on the committee that produced the Lutheran Service Book and Hymnal (1958). Elisabeth Ehrenborg-Posse

1818 - 1880 Person Name: Katharina Elisabet Posse, 1818-1880 Author of "Merciful Savior, Come and Be My Comfort" in Ambassador Hymnal Posse, Catharina Elizabeth Ehrenborg. (Råbäck, Sweden, July 22, 1818--July 22, 1880). Lutheran. Inherited her mother's interest in literature and began writing poetry at an early age. Became active in Sunday School work. Studied at a seminary in England for six months. Upon return to Sweden became director of a teacher training school associated with the deaconess organization. With this closed, she began her own school. Married A.J. Posse in 1856 and assisted him in the publication of a newspaper, Wäktaren (The Watchman). Had a deep interest in the Christian education of children and wrote and translated many hymns and songs for schools. Translated several English songs which appeared under the title Andeliga sånger för barn (Spiritual Songs for Children). Two more editions appeared later. Pilgrims-Sånger included some of her works. Author of "Så älskade Gud värlen all" (For God So Loved the World). Adapter of "När juldags morgon glimmar" (When Christmas Morn Is Breaking). --J.
