Robert Jackson

1840 - 1914 Person Name: Robert Jackson, 1840- Composer of "TRENTHAM" in The Book of Praise After receiving his musical training at the Royal Academy of Music, Robert Jackson (b, Oldham, Lancashire, England, 1840; d. Oldham, 1914) worked briefly as organist at St. Mark's Church, Grosvenor Square, in London. But he spent most of his life as organist at St. Peter's Church in Oldham (1868-1914), where his father had previously been organist for forty-eight years. A composer of hymn tunes, Jackson was also the conductor of the Oldham Music Society and Werneth Vocal Society. Bert Polman

F. D. Huntington

1819 - 1904 Person Name: Frederick D. Huntington Author of "There is no night in heaven" in African Methodist Episcopal hymn and tune book Huntington, Frederic Dan, D.D., was born at Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1819, and graduated at Amherst College, 1839, and Cambridge Divinity School, 1842. From 1842 to 1855 he was an Unitarian Minister in Boston; and from 1855 Professor of Christian Morals, and University Preacher, at Harvard. In 1859 he received Episcopal Ordination. He was for some time a Rector in Boston; and in 1869 he was consecrated Bishop of Central New York. With Dr. F. D. Hedge he edited the Unitarian Hymns for the Church of Christ, Boston, 1853. This collection contains three of his hymns:— 1. 0 Love Divine, lay on me burdens if Thou wilt. Supplication. 2. 0 Thou, in Whose Eternal Name. Ordination. 3. 0 Thou that once on Horeb stood. God in Nature. The cento, "Father, Whose heavenly kingdom lies," in the Hymns of the Spirit, Boston, 1864, is from No. 2. Dr. Huntington has also edited, with Dr. Hedge, Elim: Hymns of Holy Refreshment, a collection of Sacred Poetry. From this work his hymn for Burial, "So heaven is gathering one by one," is taken. Person Name: Anon. Author of "No night, no grief" in Hymns for the Sanctuary and Social Worship In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.
