On the Rock

Author: Fred Woodrow Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #5252 First Line: Standing on the Rock of Ages Refrain First Line: Standing, standing Lyrics: 1. Standing on the Rock of Ages, The Rock that shall endure, Unshaken by the tempest, Eternal, firm and sure; There is a safe retreat, A refuge strong and free, Amid the stormy billows Of life’s tempestuous sea. Refrain Standing, standing, Standing on the Rock of Ages, Standing, standing, No need have I to fear. 2. Standing on the Rock of Ages, We view the tranquil soul, Untroubled by the tempest, Or surging billows’ roll; Be dangers what they may, And break the waves of care, Amid the wild commotion, We stand in safety there. [Refrain] 3. Standing on the Rock of Ages, No need have we to fear, God banishes our sorrow, God wipes away our tear; We’re watching, we believe, We trust His promise sure, That crowns of joy are waiting For all His saints secure. Chas. H. Gabriel

1856 - 1932 Person Name: C. H. G. Composer of "[Standing on the Rock of Ages]" in Sixty Scripture Songs Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Gabriel's gospel songs became widely circulated through the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver urban crusades. Bert Polman

C. C. Case

1843 - 1918 Person Name: Charles Clinton Case Composer of "[Standing on the Rock of Ages]" in The Cyber Hymnal Charles Clinton Case USA 1843-1918. Born in Linesville, PA, his family moved to Gustavus, OH, when he was four. His father was an accomplished violinist, but a neighbor gave him a small violin when he was nine, and he mastered it before he could read music. At age 16 he went to singing school (without parental consent), borrowing the money from a neighbor. C. A. Bentley, a prominent conductor, was his first vocal music instructor, and William Bradbury's “Jubilee” was the school textbook. For three winters in a row, he attended Bentley's singing school, working his father's farm in the summer. He married Annie Williams. In 1866 he studied music in Boston with B. F. Baker. He also studied under George Root, Horatio Palmer, Philip Bliss, George Webb, and others, hymnwriters in their own right. Soon after, Case began teaching music, and when James McGranahan moved two miles from his home, they became friends. Case wrote and edited a number of Gospel song books in his life. 6 works. John Perry
