O Father, when the softened heart

Author: Anon. Hymnal: Hymns of the Kingdom of God #336 (1910) Lyrics: 1 O Father, when the softened heart Is lifted up in prayer to Thee, When earthly thoughts awhile depart And leave the mounting spirit free, 2 Then teach us that our love like Thine O’er all the realms of earth should flow, A shoreless stream, a flood divine, No lines of race or hue should know;— 3 Not bound by party, caste, or creed, All narrow realms of self above; For whoso of our love hath need, To him we owe the dues of love. 4 Into the circle lift us up Of Thy divine beneficence, And freely as Thou fill’st our cup Freely may we to all dispense. John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: J. B. Dykes Composer of "RIVAULX" in The Hymnal of Praise As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

William Henry Gladstone

1840 - 1891 Person Name: William H. Gladstone Composer of "OMBERSLEY" in Hymns of the Kingdom of God Born: June 3, 1840, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. Died: July 4, 1892, Westminster, London, England. Eldest son of British prime minister William Gladstone, William attended Eton College and read Greek and Latin at Christ Church College, Oxford University. A Member of Parliament for a total of 20 years, representing Chester for 3; Whitby, Yorkshire for 12; and East Worcestershire for 5. A singer and organist, he was well versed in musical history, especially the development of Anglican church music. He wrote on musical topics, and one of the views he expressed was that choral church services were to be deplored because "the choirs often discourage the congregations from singing." He wrote the anthems "Gracious and Righteous" and "Withdraw Not Thou", & chants, anthems, introits & organ voluntaries. His works include: A Selection of Hymns and Tunes, 1882 --www.hymntime.com/tch/

George M. Garrett

1834 - 1897 Person Name: George M. Garrett (1834-1897) Composer of "COMMUNION" in The Pilgrim Hymnal Born: June 8, 1834, Winchester, Hampshire, England. Died: April 9, 1897, Cambridge, England. Buried: Cambridge Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge, England
