1791 - 1891 Person Name: H. S. Ellenwood Author of "My God, to thee, in humble prayer" Ellenwood, Henry S. (Beverly, Massachusetts, July, 1791--?). He was a school teacher in Boston, 1820-1821. His The Vagabond, or New Looking Glass, was published in New York, 1823. The Carolina Sentinel, July 12, 1828, lists his name with others who had "Letters remaining in the Newbern Post Office, July 1, 1828." He may have remained in that area for a time, as his Lecture on Elocution . . . before the North Carolina Institute of Education was published in 1832. In the meantime, his Letters from Peter Pindar to a friend, relative to . . . marriage between church and state was published in New York, 1830. Two of his hymns were published in The School Hymn-Book for Normal, High, and Grammar Schools (Boston: 1850). The last record of him is the publication of his pamphlet, Secession (Aurora, Ill., 1861). --Leonard Ellinwood, DNAH Archives
