A. Brooks Everett
1828 - 1875 Person Name: Dr. A. B. Everett Composer of "EVA" in The Sacred Hymnal Asa Brooks Everett MusDoc USA 1828-1875. Born in VA, he planned to be a doctor, but decided to study music instead. He studied in Boston for four years and also in Leipzig, Germany for four years.. He composed many gospel tunes and edited “The Sceptre” a New York publication. His brothers, Benjamin and Leonard, were also composers. He and Leonard organized a musical instruction system in Richmond, VA, in the 1850s. By 1861, 50 teachers and singing schools were representing them and using their publications. He died in Nashville, TN.

Person Name: Anon. Author of "She sleeps in Jesus, peaceful rest" in The Songs of Zion In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Charles Edward Pollock
1853 - 1928 Person Name: Chas. Edw. Pollock Composer of "ELM STREET" in The Songs of Zion Charles Edward Pollock USA 1853-1928. Born at Newcastle, PA, he moved to Jefferson City, MO, when age 17. He was a cane maker for C W Allen. He also worked 20 years for the MO Pacific Railroad, as a depot clerk and later as Assistant Roadmaster. He was a musician and prolific songwriter, composing 5000+ songs, mostly used in Sunday school settings and church settings. He took little remuneration for his compositions, preferring they be freely used. He produced three songbooks: “Praises”, “Beauty of praise”, and “Waves of melody”. In 1886 he married Martha (Mattie) Jane Harris, and they had three children: Robert, Edward, and a daughter. He died in Merriam, KS.

Edwin Barnes
1864 - 1930 Composer of "RUSSELL" in The Church Hymnal Edwin Barnes was born on March 15, 1864 in Shirley, Southampton, England. In 1881, Barnes moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, to attend Battle Creek College and play the organ at the Seventh-day Adventist church there. He eventually served as head of the Battle Creek College music department for almost 20 years. He also formed an amateur music club, helped found an annual spring music festival in Battle Creek, ran the Battle Creek Conservatory of Music (until 1926), and was organist and choir director at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek. Hillsdale College, Michigan, awarded him an honorary doctorate degree in 1920. He died on April 11, 1930 in Battle Creek, Michigan.
