Awake, Thou That Sleepest

Author: T. O. Chisholm Hymnal: Uplifting Songs #72 (1917) First Line: "Awake, thou that sleepest," Unconscious of harm Refrain First Line: Awake! O sleeping one, awake! Lyrics: 1 “Awake, thou that sleepest,” Unconscious of harm, Have done with thy dreaming, Be filled with alarm! Thy soul is in danger, Be warned of thy fate! Lest yielding to slumber, Thou waken too late. Refrain: Awake! O sleeping one, awake! Ere death thy soul shall overtake; Awake! arise! thy bands of slumber break, “And Christ shall give thee light.” 2 “Awake, thou that sleepest,” Unmindful, secure, While time speeds thee onward To doom that is sure; Arouse thee! bestir thee, While yet thou hast breath, The sleep that enthralls thee Will deepen to death! [Refrain] 3 “Awake, thou that sleepest,” arise from thy bed, While mercy is calling, Ere mercy be fled. Now turn thy feet homeward, Tho’ darkness affright The Father will greet thee, And Christ, give thee light. [Refrain] Topics: Solos, Duetts and Quartettes Tune Title: ["Awake, thou that sleepest," Unconscious of harm]
