Throughout his career, he served as music supervisor and choral music director in high schools and colleges. Meter: 7.8.7.7 with refrain Translator of "He Is Born" in The United Methodist Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Shirley Erena Murray

1931 - 2020 Person Name: Shirley Erena Murray, 1931- Meter: 7.8.7.7 with refrain Author of "When We Lift Our Pack and Go" in Community of Christ Sings Shirley Erena Murray (b. Invercargill, New Zealand, 1931) studied music as an undergraduate but received a master’s degree (with honors) in classics and French from Otago University. Her upbringing was Methodist, but she became a Presbyterian when she married the Reverend John Stewart Murray, who was a moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Shirley began her career as a teacher of languages, but she became more active in Amnesty International, and for eight years she served the Labor Party Research Unit of Parliament. Her involvement in these organizations has enriched her writing of hymns, which address human rights, women’s concerns, justice, peace, the integrity of creation, and the unity of the church. Many of her hymns have been performed in CCA and WCC assemblies. In recognition for her service as a writer of hymns, the New Zealand government honored her as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the Queen’s birthday on 3 June 2001. Through Hope Publishing House, Murray has published three collections of her hymns: In Every Corner Sing (eighty-four hymns, 1992), Everyday in Your Spirit (forty-one hymns, 1996), and Faith Makes the Song (fifty hymns, 2002). The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust, for which she worked for a long time, has also published many of her texts (cf. back cover, Faith Makes the Song). In 2009, Otaga University conferred on her an honorary doctorate in literature for her contribution to the art of hymn writing. Costen, a native of South Carolina, retired as Helmar Emil Nielsen Professor of Worship and Music, choral director, and chair of the church music degree program at Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She subsequently became the Visiting Professor of Liturgical Studies at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. Music is the author of William J. Reynolds: Church Musician (2013), Christian Hymnody in Twentieth-Century Britain and America: An Annotated Bibliography (2001), Instruments in Church: A Collection of Source Documents (1998), and Hymnology: A Collection of Source Readings (1996). He has co-authored or edited four other books, as well as publishing editions of A Selection of Shape-Note Folk Hymns for A-R Editions' Recent Researches in American Music series (2005), John Weldon's opera The Judgment of Paris for the Recent Researches in the Music of the Baroque Era series (1999), and Oliver Holden (1765-1844): Selected Works in the Music of the New American Nation series (Garland, 1998). He served as Editor of The Hymn (the journal of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, 1990-96), as Chair of the New Materials Subcommittee for The Baptist Hymnal (1991), and as chair of the text and tunes committee and one of the editors of Celebrating Grace (2010). He is a member of the Society for American Music; the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada; the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers; the Baptist History and Heritage Society, and the Baptist Church Music Conference, which he served as President (2001-02) and Educational Division Vice-President (1992-1994). --See Baylor University bio (03 July 2014).
