C. Austin Miles

1868 - 1946 Person Name: C. Austin Miles (1868-1946) Author of "In the Garden" in Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal Charles Austin Miles USA 1868-1946. Born at Lakehurst, NJ, he attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and the University of PA. He became a pharmacist. He married Bertha H Haagen, and they had two sons: Charles and Russell. In 1892 he abandoned his pharmacy career and began writing gospel songs. At first he furnished compositions to the Hall-Mack Publishing Company, but soon became editor and manager, where he worked for 37 years. He felt he was serving God better in the gospel song writing business, than as a pharmacist. He published the following song books: “New songs of the gospel” (1900), “The service of praise” (1900), “The voice of praise” (1904), “The tribute of song” (1904), “New songs of the gospel #2” (1905), “Songs of service” (1910), “Ideal Sunday school hymns” (1912). Vicente P. Mendoza

1875 - 1955 Person Name: Vicente Mendoza Translator of "A Solas al Huerto Yo Voy" in Himnario Bautista Vicente Mendoza Born: December 24, 1875, Guadalajara, Mexico. Died: 1955, Mexico City, Mexico. Mendoza studied initially under Don Aurelio Ortega. At age of 11 he went to work in a Protestant print shop in Mexico City and helped produce El Evangelista Mexicano (The Mexican Evangelist) for the Methodist Church of the South; he rose to become its director for 17 years. Looking to improve himself, Mendoza entered a night school for workers, but later feeling the call to preach the Gospel, he entered the Presbyterian Seminary in Mexico City. When the seminary closed temporarily, Mendoza entered the Methodist Institute of Puebla, where he finished the course in theology. In 1898 he became a member of the Annual Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he belonged to the Southern Methodist Conference of California. Person Name: Necunoscut Translator of "Eu Vin Singur În Grădina" in The Cyber Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Translator of many hymns into, and author of a few in, Esperanto, as well as some hymns in English. 13 texts (incl. 3 original) in Adoru, plus two in Espero Katolika's supplement. Edited the largest online Esperanto hymnal, TTT-Himnaro Cigneta, now accessible via the Wayback Machine at archive.org, (https://web.archive.org/web/20091021113553/http://geocities.com/cigneto/pretaj.html) as well as in large part here on Hymnary.org. Lives near Seattle.
