The Son of God goes forth to war

Author: Reginald Heber Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 841 hymnals Lyrics: The Son of God goes forth to war, A kingly crown to gain; His blood-red banner streams afar: Who follows in his train? Who best can drink his cup of woe, Triumphant over pain; Who patient bears his cross below, He follows in his train. The martyr first, whose eagle eye Could pierce beyond the grave; Who saw his Master in the sky, And called on him to save. Like him, with pardon on his tongue, In midst of mortal pain, He prayed for them that did the wrong: Who follows in his train? A glorious band, the chosen few, On whom the Spirit came: Twelve valiant saints, their hope they knew, And mocked the cross and flame. They met the tyrant's brandished steel, The lion's gory mane; They bowed their necks the death to feel: Who follows in their train? A noble army, men and boys, The matron and the maid, Around the Savior's throne rejoice, In robes of light arrayed. They climbed the steep ascent of heaven Through peril, toil, and pain: O God, to us may grace be given To follow in their train. Amen. Topics: St. Stephen; Holy Days All Saints; Missions; Processional; Sunday Schools General Use; Parochial Missions Used With Tune: CRUSADER

Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 7.7.7.5 Appears in 205 hymnals Lyrics: Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, Taught by thee we covet most, Of thy gifts at Pentecost, Holy, heavenly love. Love is kind, and suffers long, Love is meek, and thinks no wrong, Love than death itself more strong; Therefore, give us love. Prophecy will fade away, Melting in the light of day; Love will ever with us stay; Therefore, give us love. Faith will vanish into sight; Hope be emptied in delight; Love in heaven will shine more bright; Therefore, give us love. Faith and hope and love we see, Joining hand in hand, agree, But the greatest of the three And the best, is love. From the overshadowing Of thy gold and silver wing, Shed on us, who to thee sing, Holy, heavenly love. Amen. Topics: Septuagesima; Whitsunday; Sunday Schools Whitsunday Used With Tune: CHARITY

The head, that once was crown'd with thorns

Author: Thomas Kelly Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 513 hymnals Lyrics: The head, that once was crowned with thorns, Is crowned with glory now; A royal diadem adorns The mighty Victor's brow. The highest place that heaven affords Is His, is His by right, The King of kings, and Lord of lords, And heaven's eternal Light. The joy of all who dwell above; The joy of all below, To whom He manifests His love And grants His Name to know. To them the cross with all its shame, With all its grace is given; Their name, an everlasting name, Their joy, the joy of heaven. They suffer with their Lord below, They reign with Him above, Their profit and their joy to know The mystery of His love. The cross He bore is life and health, Though shame and death to Him: His people's hope, His people's wealth, Their everlasting theme. Topics: The Ascension Day Used With Tune: ST. MAGNUS

And now, O Father, mindful of the love

Author: William Bright Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 92 hymnals Lyrics: And now, O Father, mindful of the love That bought us, once for all, on Calvary's tree, And having with us him that pleads above, We here present, we here spread forth to thee, That only offering perfect in thine eyes, The one true, pure, immortal sacrifice. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, And only look on us as found in him; Look not on our misusings of thy grace Our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim; For lo! between our sins and their reward, We set the Passion of thy Son our Lord. 304 And then for those, our dearest and our best, By this prevailing presence we appeal; O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast! O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal! From tainting mischief keep them white and clear, And crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come; O draw us to thy feet, Most patient Savior, who canst love us still! And by this Food, so awful and so sweet, Deliver us from every touch of ill: In thine own service make us glad and free, And grant us nevermore to part with thee. Amen. My soul with patience waits

Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 40 hymnals Lyrics: My soul with patience waits For thee, the living Lord: My hopes are on thy promise built, Thy never-failing word. In the cross of Christ I glory

Author: John Bowring Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 1,519 hymnals Lyrics: In the cross of Christ I glory, Towering o'er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime. When the woes of life o'ertake me, Hopes deceive, and fears annoy, Never shall the cross forsake me: Lo! it glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way, From the cross the radiance streaming, Adds new luster to the day. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, By the cross are sanctified; Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that through all time abide. While Thee I seek, protecting Power

Author: Helen M. Williams Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 684 hymnals Lyrics: While thee I seek, protecting Power, Be my vain wishes stilled; And may this consecrated hour With better hopes be filled. Thy love the power of thought bestowed, To thee my thoughts would soar: Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed, That mercy I adore. In each event of life, how clear Thy ruling hand I see; Each blessing to my soul more dear, Because conferred by thee. In every joy that crowns my days, In every pain I bear, My heart shall find delight in praise, Or seek relief in prayer. When gladness wings my favoured hour, Thy love my thoughts shall fill; Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower, My soul shall meet thy will. My lifted eye, without a tear, The gathering storms shall see; My steadfast heart shall know no fear; That heart will rest on thee. Amen. Topics: Through the Week Used With Tune: BEATITUDO

The spacious firmament on high

Author: Joseph Addison Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 790 hymnals Lyrics: The spacious firmament on high, With all the blue ethereal sky, And spangled heavens, a shining frame, Their great Original proclaim. The unwearied sun from day to day Does his Creator's power display, And publishes to every land The work of an almighty Hand. Soon as the evening shades prevail, The moon takes up the wondrous tale, And nightly to the listening earth Repeats the story of her birth; Whilst all the stars that round her burn, And all the planets in their turn, Confirm the tidings as they roll, And spread the truth from pole to pole. What though in solemn silence all Move round this dark terrestrial ball; What though no real voice nor sound Amidst their radiant orbs be found; In reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice; For ever singing, as they shine, "The Hand that made us is divine." Soldiers of Christ, arise

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 900 hymnals Lyrics: Soldiers of Christ, arise, And put your armour on; Strong in the strength which God supplies, Through his eternal Son. Strong in the Lord of Hosts, And in his mighty power: Who in the strength of Jesus trusts Is more than conqueror. Stand then in his great might, With all his strength endued, And take, to arm you for the fight, The panoply of God. From strength to strength go on, Wrestle, and fight, and pray: Tread all the powers of darkness down, And win the well-fought day. That, having all things done, And all your conflicts past, Ye may overcome, through Christ alone, And stand complete at last. 315 To God, the Father, Son, And Spirit, ever blest, The One in Three, the Three in One Be endless praise addressed. Amen. Topics: Holy Baptism Adults; Sunday Schools General Use; Parochial Missions Used With Tune: SILVER STREET
