Frank C. Huston

1871 - 1959 Person Name: F. C. H. Hymnal Number: 304 Author of "It Pays to Serve Jesus" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Huston, Frank C. (Orange, Indiana, September 12, 1871--October 14, 1959, Jacksonville, Florida). Both parents were musically inclined, and at the age of 12, he was playing cornet in a local concert band. By the age of 17, he was singing regularly in male and mixed voice units, and at 18, he was conducting church music. Education: Moody Bible Institute. Studied with W.M. Hackleman (a cousin), D.B. Towner, W.C. Caffin, and Charles H. Gabriel. On May 13, 1894, he married Bertha Martin. There were seven children. He spent a brief period as a public school teacher, then became a singing evangelist and traveled for a time with the Charles Reign Scoville Party. He served as Chaplain in the First World War and continued his interest and participation in patriotic organizations. He served a term as Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a term as national president of the Federated Patriotic Societies. While in his eighties, he served as chaplain for the Jacksonville Chapter of the Coast Guard. He was ordained to the ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1915. He owned and operated his own publishing company in Indiana for a number of years and was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Frank Huston is credited with more than 400 songs, some patriotic. His two best-known hymns, for which he wrote both words and music, are: "It Pays to Serve Jesus," written in 1909, and "The Christ of the Cross," which was copyrighted in 1924. Among the several hundred others are: "Keep on Believing," "The Word of God Shall Stand," "Lead On, O Christ, Thou Holy One," and "O Holy Day of Pentecost." A book, On Hundred Hymns and Gospel Songs, was published in 1955. For the last 18 years of his life, Huston lived in Florida Christian Home in Jacksonville, a home for the aged maintained by the Christian Church. There, he was active with his music and voluminous correspondence. Funeral services were held in the Edgewood Avenue Christian Church in Jacksonville, Florida, and interment was in Knightstown, Indiana. --Carlton C. Buck, DNAH Archives ============================= During World War I, Governor Goodrich of Indiana appointed Huston chaplain of the 150th Field Artillery, Rainbow Division, but through some mistake he was never called to join the regiment before the war ended. His services, however, were in great demand in his home state and city, and he became widely known as the "Singing Chaplain." In World War II, Huston volunteered his services to the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was made a boatswain’s mate when he was 74 and given duty as a recruiter. He was discharged as an ensign. Adoniram Judson

1788 - 1850 Hymnal Number: 530 Author of "Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Adoniram Judson MA DD USA 1788-1850. Born at Malden, MA, his father being a Congregational pastor. He graduated from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1807 and opened a school. He wrote an English grammar and mathematics textbook for girls. He then attended Andover Theological Seminary. studying Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. His friend, Jacob Eames, turned him from religion, but Eames died suddenly, and he Judson, shocked, turned back to God in 1808. In 1809 he became interested in missions. In 1810 he was licensed to preach by the Orange Vermont Congregational Association, preparatory to pastoral ministry. However, he had inclinations to overseas ministry, and, having failed to get an appointment from the London Missionary Society, persuaded the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ACBFM), to send him and his wife, Ann Hasaltine, and six others, as Baptist missionaries to India. They departed in 1812 on a 4-month voyage to Calcutta. Enroute, Ann miscarried their first child. Arriving there, having studied Baptist principles enroute, they decided to be baptized. They were, and they resigned from ABCFM, laying plans for creation of a Baptist Missionary society from the U.S. After experiencing various hindrances from the East India Company, they escaped India, and began mission work in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) in 1813, becoming the first mission of American Baptists (where Judson labored for almost 40 years). They spent three years learning the Burmese language with the help of a tutor. They evangelized and did Bible translation. They spent 12 years making 18 converts from Buddhism. In 1817 a printing press came from America and a printer, George Hough, and his wife. They printed the first Christian tracts in the Burmese language, including 800 copies of the book of Matthew, translated into Burmese by Judson. That helped in gaining converts. In 1824, Rangoon having been taken by the British, Dr. Judson was charged with being a British spy and was held captive by the natives until the Burmese capitulated to the British in 1826. Thanks to his sickly wife’s efforts he was released after 21 months in squalid prison conditions, and was pressed to serve as a translator for the Burmese government during negotiations for the Treaty Yandobo. His wife died that year from complications of smallpox. In 1828 he moved his mission efforts to Moulmein, where, with help from a Jonathan Wade, he built a church and school and continued work on the Burmese Bible. He married Sarah Hall Boardman, widow of his late colleague, G D Boardman, who died at sea. She was a gifted linguist and teacher. He finished translating the Burmese Bible, after 24 years, in 1834, and he and wrote several tracts in that language. After the birth of her 8th child (most with her former husband), Sarah’s health declined, and they embarked for the U.S. She died enroute. He completed the trip and remained on furlough for nine months. He suffered from laryngitis due to pulmonary illness, and reduced strength, but was hailed a hero throughout the Christian community. When he talked, he had to use someone who could repeat his words in order to be heard above a whisper. While at Madison University in upstate NY, he met and married Emily Chubbock, a writer and educator. They returned to Burma in 1846 to continue work on an enlarged Burmese dictionary. It was compiled in 1849. Shortly thereafter, he contracted a respiratory fever and, while attempting to travel to a better climate for his health, died at sea in the Bay of Bengal. Most of their children died in infancy or when young. His legacy included establishing 100 churches, 8000 believers, and encouraging more missionaries to come to Burma after him, Sarah Cummings, Jason Tuma, and Eleanor Macomber, to name a few. His memoirs were published in 1853. He also wrote some hymns. Because of his efforts, Myanmar has the 3rd largest population of Baptist Christians in the world, behind the U.S. and India. Each July there is a Judson Day in Myanmar. Accolades given and institutions and organizations named after Judson in both Myanmar and America are too numerous to name here, but one can look them up. John Perry ============ Judson, Adoniram, D.D., born at Maldon, Massachusetts, Aug. 9, 1788, where his father was Pastor of a Baptist Church. He graduated at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, 1807; and went in 1815, together with his first wife, as a Missionary to India. On June 8, 1824, Rangoon having been taken by the British, Dr. Judson was imprisoned by the natives, and was kept in captivity until the Burmese capitulated to the British in 1826. His first wife dying on Oct. 24, 1826, he married the widow of his late colleague, G. D. Boardman (ne'e Hull, April 10, 1834. He died at sea, April 12, 1850, and was buried in the deep. He translated the Bible into Burmese, and wrote several tracts in that language. A Burmese-English Dictionary was compiled from his papers. His Memoirs, by Dr. Wayland, were published in 1853. His hymns include :— 1. Our Father God, [Lord] Who art in heaven. The Lord's Prayer. This hymn is dated "Prison, Ava, March 1825," and was written during his imprisonment. It was given in his Memoirs, 1853, vol. i. p. 308. It is in common use in Great Britain and America. 2. Our Saviour bowed beneath the wave. Holy Baptism. This dates from 1829, or earlier, and is in 7 stanzas, It is said to have been "sung at the Baptism of several soldiers at Moulmein, British Pegu." St. i.-iii. usually form the hymn. 3. Come, Holy Spirit, Dove divine. Holy Baptism. This is composed of st. vii., v., vi. of No. 2, and is found in Winchell's Collection, 1832. [Rev. F. M. F. A. Graves

1856 - 1927 Person Name: F. A. G. Hymnal Number: 175 Author of "Honey in the Rock" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Rv Frederick Arthur Graves USA 1856-1927. Born at Williamstown, MA, he was raised in a Christian family, but was orphaned at age 9 after the death of his father, a taylor, then three years later his mother (tuberculosis), he lived on a farm with a family names Hollis that worked him hard and treated him poorly. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when 14. At 21 he moved to Nobles County, MN, and it seemed that his seizures had stopped. Grateful for that, he served the American Sunday School Union as an organizer and evangelist. He was musical, and after age 35 wrote 43 songs. He, with wife Vina, raised three children, Arthur, Irene, and Carl. He studied Bible and music in Chicago, IL and Northfield, MA. Returning to Minneapolis and hearing evangelist John A Dowie, he experienced permanent healing, which provided a backdrop for his gospel songs. He was ordained an Assemblies of God minister in 1916. Later, he moved to Zion Hill,IL, where he lived the rest of his life. He died at Zion City, IL. Nearly 1000 people attended his funeral there. John Perry

Lizzie Tourjée

1858 - 1913 Person Name: Lizzie S. Tourjee Hymnal Number: 212 Composer of "[There's a wideness in God's mercy]" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Lizzie Shove Tourjee Estabrook USA 1858-1913. Born in Newport, RI, daughter of a famed music educator, organist, and composer, he encouraged her efforts at composing. When 17, she composed the tune for the famous hymn “Wellesley”. When her father, founder of the New England Conservatory of Music, became editor of the Methodist hymnal, he included her tune in the 1878 edition of the book, naming it for the college she attended, as she had written the tune while attending that school. She married Franklin Estabrook in 1883. They had a son, Rufus. She taught music and was an organist in Auburndale, MA. She died in Newton, MA. John Perry

Leech spent her child­hood in Cape May Court House, New Jer­sey, and at­tend­ed Co­lum­bia Un­i­ver­si­ty and Tem­ple Un­i­ver­si­ty. She played the or­gan at Be­tha­ny Meth­od­ist Church in Cam­den, New Jer­sey, served as ac­com­pa­nist at evan­gel­i­cal serv­ic­es, and wrote some 500 hymn tunes in her life­time. Edward Denny

1796 - 1889 Person Name: Sir Edward Denny Hymnal Number: 527 Author of "Blest Feast of Love Divine" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Denny, Sir Edward, Bart . Sir Edward Denny, son of Sir E. Denny, 4th baronet, of Tralee Castle, County of Kerry, was born 2 Oct., 1796, and succeeded his father in August, 1831. He is a member of the Plymouth Brethren, and has contributed largely to their hymnody. His first publication, in which many of his hymns appeared, was A Selection of Hymns, Lond. Central Tract Depot, 1839. This was followed by Hymns & Poems , Lond., 1848 (third ed., 1870). He has also published several prose works. Many of his hymns are popular, and are in extensive use as:—" A pilgrim through this lonely world"; "Bride of the Lamb, rejoice, rejoice"; “Bright with all His crowns of glory"; “Light of the lonely pilgrim's heart”; "Sweet feast of love divine," and several others. In addition to these, which are separately annotated, and those which are confined in their use to the congregations of the "Brethren," there are also nearly 20 in limited use in Great Britain and America. Of these the following appeared, first in his Selection of Hymns, 1839; then, in the Appendix to Hymns for the Poor of the Flock, 1841; and then in his Hymns & Poems, 1848-70 :— 1. Break forth, 0 earth, in praises. Praise for Redemption. This is given in several collections in Great Britain and America. 2. Children of God, in all your need. The Great High Priest. In limited use. 3. Children of light, arise and shine. Looking unto Jesus. In numerous hymnals in G. Britain and America. 4. Children of light, awake, awake. Advent . This hymn is an application of the Parable of the Ten Virgins to the Second Coming of Christ. 5. Dear Lord, amid the throng that pressed. The Holy Women at the Cross. The use of this hymn in America is somewhat extensive. 6. Hope of our hearts, 0 Lord, appear. The Second Advent desired. In the Hymns for the Poor of the Flock, 1837; and the author's Hymns & Poems, 1848-60, and various collections in Great Britain and America. 7. Joy to the ransomed earth. Jesus the King. Its use is limited. 8. Lo 'tis the heavenly army. The Second Advent. The original of this hymn is in 4 stanzas of 10 lines and as such it is usually given: but in the Peoples Hymnal, 1867, it is arranged in 4 stanzas of 8 lines, and is also slightly altered. 9. 0 grace divine! the Saviour shed. Good Friday. In limited use. 10. 0 what a bright and blessed world. The New Earth. This hymn is based upon Gen. v. 29, as interpreted from a Millennial point of view. Christ is regarded as the Rest (Noah-Rest) of His people, and the remover of the curse from the earth. 11. Sweet was the hour, 0 Lord, to Thee. Christ at the Well of Sychar. Limited in use. 12. Thou vain deceitful world, farewell. Forsaking the World for Christ. In several collections. 13. Through Israel's land the Lord of all . Mission to the Jews. In addition to its use in its full form, it is also given as: "O Zion, when thy Saviour came," as in Dr. Walker's Psalms & Hymns, 1855-71; Snepp's Songs of Grace & Glory, and others. This opens with stanza ii. 14. 'Tis finish'd all—our souls to win. Jesus the Guide and Friend. In several collections. 15. 'Tis He, the Mighty Saviour comes . Missions . Given in Snepp, and one or two others. 16. 'Tis night, but O the joyful morn. Hope. In a few hymnals; also, beginning with stanzas ii., "Lord of our hearts, beloved of Thee," in Dr. Hatfield's Church Hymn Book, N. Y., 1872. 17. To Calvary, Lord, in Spirit now. Good Friday. This is given in several hymnals, including Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1866, &c. The next is in the Selection of 1839, and the Hymns & Poems, 1848-70:— 18. 0 Blessed Lord, Thy feeble Sheep. The Good Shepherd. Its use is limited. The three with which we close are from J. G, Deck's Psalms & Hymns, 1842, Pt. ii., and the Hymns & Poems, 1848-70:— 19. Hark to the trump! behold it breaks . The Resurrection . The design of this hymn is thus described, by the author: "These lines are supposed to be the utterance of the saints at the blessed moment when they are actually ascending to meet the Lord in the air, as described in 1 Cor. xv. 51-57 and 1 Thess. iv. 16-18. It is given in several collections." 20. Isles of the deep, rejoice, rejoice. Missions. 21. Where, in this waste unlovely [and desert] world! Rest for the Weary. William Horsley

1774 - 1858 Hymnal Number: 144 Composer of "[There is a green hill far away]" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Born: November 15, 1774, Mayfair, London, England. Died: June 12, 1858, Kensington, London, England. Buried: Kensal Green Cemetery, London, England. Horsley studied music privately, then became organist of Ely Chapel, Holborn, London, in 1794. He assisted Dr. J. W. Callcott (who encouraged him in persevering at Glee-writing, at which he became successful) as organist of the Asylum for Female Orphans, and married Callcott’s daughter. He succeeded Callcott in 1802, holding that post 52 years. A difference of opinion with the Asylum Committee led to him being dismissed. In 1838 he also became organist of Charterhouse "at a salary of £70 and a room set apart and a fire provided when necessary for his use on those days upon which his duty requires his attendance at the Hospital." He founded the London Philharmonic Society, and in later years was a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn. J. C. Horsley, the eminent painter, relates in his Reminiscences the following experience when he went with his father to one of the services: "When I was four years old my father was organist to the Asylum for Female Orphans, which was a stately building on the Westminster Bridge Road; and one Sunday he took me in with him to the morning service and landed me in the organ-loft. Everything was new and surprising to me, especially the crowd of buxom girls, at least a hundred in number, all dressed alike, ranged right and left of the organ, and who, when the organ had played a bar or two of the opening hymn, sang out with open mouths and such energy that I was positively scared, and in continently accompanied the performance with a prolonged howl; upon which my father, continuing to play the accompaniment with one hand, supplied me promptly with paper out of his capacious pocket, where he always kept a store of backs of letters (envelopes were not invented then), and a silver pencil-case of heroic proportions, thus quieting me." Haldor Lillenas

1885 - 1959 Hymnal Number: 56 Composer of "[It is glory just to walk with Him whose blood has ransomed me]" in Glorious Gospel Hymns Rv Haldor Lillenas DMus Norway/USA 1885-1959. Born at Stord, near Bergen, Norway, his father sold their 15 acre farm in Norway and emigrated to the U.S., buying a farm in Colton, SD. After he built a sod house, the family (wife and three chldren) also came to SD in 1887. They moved to Astoria, Oregon in 1889, where Lillenas learned English and began writing song lyrics at an early age. In 1900 the family moved again to Roseville, MN, where he worked as a farm laborer and began attending a Lutheran high school at Hawick, MN. He sold a few songs at age 19. At age 21 he began writing more songs, encouraged by some earlier ones becoming popular (“He set me free” was one). His mother died in 1906 and his father returned to ND, but Lillenas decided to move back to Astoria, OR, to finish a chemical correspondence course he had been taking. There he found employment in a chemical factory. He started attending a Lutheran church, but one evening he heard the song, “Tell mother I’ll be there”, sung at a mission. It made him decide to commit his life to Christ. An elderly lady who worked there told him about Jesus, and he began attending the Peniel Mission, a holiness rescue mission in Astoria, OR. He started working at the mission himself. In 1907 he moved to Portland, OR, where he worked with the Peniel Mission there, the mission paying most of his expenses. He was appointed leader of the mission. He saw many there come to know Christ and felt called to the Lord’s work. He joined the First Church of the Nazarene in Portland. Soon he enrolled in a ministerial course of study by correspondence. Soon afterward, he joined a vocal group associated with the Salvation Army called the ‘Charioteers Brigade’, which held street meetings and revival services throught much of CA. As a result of generous donations made, and efforts by his pastor, A O Hendricks, he was able to attend Pacific Bible College (later renamed Pasadena College), Los Angeles, CA. He also found part-time work to help support himself. He was soon a music director at a local church, and was preaching and writing songs. He also studied voice at the Lyric School of Music in Los Angeles, CA. While at Deets, he met and married Bertha Mae Wilson, also on an evangelistic team. Both preached. She was a songwriter like he. They practiced music at her father’s house and found that their voices blended well. They had two children: Evangline, and Wendell. They eventually became elders in the Nazarene Church, and she eventually became an ordained minister as well. He also studied music at the Siegel-Myers School of Music Chicago, IL. He composed songs for cantatas, Christmas, Easter, and special day services. He also used several pseudonyms in their composition. He traveled as an evangelist, then he pastored several churches (1910-1924) at Lompoc, CA, then Redlands, CA, and later in Indianapolis, IN. While there, In 1924, he founded the Lillenas Music Company (bought by the Nazarene Publishing Company in 1930). His wife preached at their pastorate until he was able to get the company up and running. While they owned the company, they published more than 700,000 hymnals. He worked as an editor there (after selling his company) until his retirement in 1950, becoming an advisor for them until his death. Also that year Lillenas purchased a 500 acre rural estate in Miller County, MO, where they built an Ozark home called ‘Melody Lane’. Lillenas joined the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) in 1938. In 1941 he received an honorable doctorate degree from Olivet Nazarene College, Bourbonnais, IL. In 1945 Bertha died of cancer, and later that year Lillenas remarried to a Lola Dell, and they lived in Melody Lane until 1955, when they moved to Pasadena, CA, attending the Nazarene Church there. They also made three trips to Norway after his retirement, and he wrote three books during that time: “Modern gospel song stories (1952), “Down Melody Lane (an autobiography): (1953), “Motoring 11,000 miles through Norway-A guide for tourists” (1955). In 1955 they toured Israel and sponsored a Palestinian Greek Orthodox family he had met as immigrants to the US that included Sirhan Bishara Sirhan (born in 1944). After they arrived in Pasadena, the Sirhan family stayed with Lillenas for several months, after which the Sirhans moved to a home Lillenas rented and furnished to them. When Mary Sirhan’s husband abandoned her and her two sons and returned to Jordan, Lillenas ensured that they were able to remain in the US. S B Sirhan was the convicted killer of Robert Kennedy. Lillenas wrote some 4000 hymn lyrics, supplying some for evangelists. Four of his song books contain his hymns: “Special sacred songs” (1919), “New Sacred Songs”, “Strains of love”, and “Special sacred songs #2”. He died at Aspen, CO. He is buried at Kansas City, MO.
