Joël Blomqvist

(Stockholm, Sweden, November 15, 1840--October 30, 1930, Kullarstad, Sweden). Swedish Free Church Movement. Upholsterer by trade, lay preacher and singer. Colporteur for Uppsala City Mission, 1874-1878. Wrote about 400 hymn texts in the pietistic tradition and almost as many tunes. Published several hymn collections including Sabbatsklockan, 1877-1878, and Fridstoner, 1879-1882. Edited musical periodical, Fridsrösten, 1884-1886. His works are representative of the Rosenian revival period. Author of "Heavenly Father, Hear My Supplication," (Helige Fader, böj ditt öra neder), "Heavenly Spirit, Gentle Spirit" (Himladuva, Ande ljuva), "Praise the Lord, All Praise and Blessing" (Loven Herren, ty att lova), and "Sabbath Day of Rest and Cheer" (Sabbatsdag, hur skön du är). Anders C. Rutström

(Rutvik, Sweden, November 30, 1721--October 27, 1772). Lutheran. University of Uppsala. Ordained 1745. University of Griefswald, Th.D. 1756. Pastorates at Storkyrkan (cathedral church), Stockholm (assistant curate) 1745-1756; Hedvig Eleanora Church, Stockholm, 1758-1765. Arrested for his Calvinistic and Herrnhut tendencies. Died in prison. Wrote many hymn texts which were published after his death by his friends as Sions Nya Sånger, 1778. This collection was widely used among the pietists for almost a century. S. J. Hedborn

1783 - 1849 Hymnal Number: d33 Author of "Hoega majest't vi alla" in Lill Basunen, Innehallande Andliga Sanger Samuel Johan Hedborn, born 14 October 1783 in Kolstad, Heda parish in Östergötland, died 26 December 1849 in Assjö rectory in Askeryds parish, Jönköping in Småland, was a Swedish writer, wise and hymn writer. Hedborn was born in a soldier in the village Kolstad out on Östgötaslätten and had all his youth and first study in Linköping and then at Uppsala University 1806 - in 1809 a struggle against poverty, was ordained last year. After his ordination, he was first a curate in Östergötland same year, teachers in Stockholm in 1812 and extraordinary court preacher in 1815. In Uppsala and Stockholm , he became good friends with many Swedish romantic, including Atterbom, which also had its roots in Östergötland and northern Småland. Hedborn became one of the Aurora League's founders and helped in Phosphoros and Poetic calendar, where he published a number of poems, some of which Lullaby (Ute summer breeze blowing) is probably his best known. 1810-14 Hedborn suffered from depression, which at times made him unable to attend to his duties. During this time he developed into religious poet and published two collections of Psalms (1812-13). After a long silence gathered Hedborn his poems in memory and poetry, beginning of an autobiography, which is mostly about his childhood. Samuel Johan Hedborns collected writings were published with biography of Per Daniel Amadeus Atterbom in two bands in 1853. He was vicar in his mother's home parish Askeryd in Linköping diocese from 1820 until his death, where Hedborn also is buried at Askeryds church during a cast iron cross. Hedborn is represented in the 1986 hymnal with original texts of five works (No 120, 132, 329, 347 and 391) and processing/translation of a hymn (No. 104). John Dowling

(Pavensey, Sussex, England, May 12, 1807--July 4, 1878, Middletown, New York). Baptist. Father of Rev. George Thomas Dowling. Educated in England; received D.D. from Transylvania University in 1846. Pastorates in Catskill, New York, 1832-1834; Newport, Rhode Island, 1834-1836; New York, New York, 1844-1852, 1856-1868; Philadelphia, 1852-1856; Newark, New Jersey. Author of various works, including Exposition of the Prophecies (1840), Defence of the Protestant Scriptures (1843), History of Romanism (1845). Edited and translated other works. In 1849, published A New Collection of Hymns, Designed Especially for Use in Conference and Prayer Meetings, and Fmaily Worship (New York: Edward H. Fletcher). Elisabeth Ehrenborg-Posse

1818 - 1880 Person Name: Betty Ehrenborg-Posse Hymnal Number: d91 Author of "Saa 'lskade Gud v'rlden all" in Lill Basunen, Innehallande Andliga Sanger Posse, Catharina Elizabeth Ehrenborg. (Råbäck, Sweden, July 22, 1818--July 22, 1880). Lutheran. Inherited her mother's interest in literature and began writing poetry at an early age. Became active in Sunday School work. Studied at a seminary in England for six months. Upon return to Sweden became director of a teacher training school associated with the deaconess organization. With this closed, she began her own school. Married A.J. Posse in 1856 and assisted him in the publication of a newspaper, Wäktaren (The Watchman). Had a deep interest in the Christian education of children and wrote and translated many hymns and songs for schools. Translated several English songs which appeared under the title Andeliga sånger för barn (Spiritual Songs for Children). Two more editions appeared later. Pilgrims-Sånger included some of her works. Author of "Så älskade Gud värlen all" (For God So Loved the World). Adapter of "När juldags morgon glimmar" (When Christmas Morn Is Breaking). --J.
