George Keith

1638 - 1716 Hymnal Number: 198 Author of "How Firm a Foundation" in Hymns and Spiritual Songs Number Two George Keith, according to D. Sedgwick, was the author of "How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord." Little is known about Keith, save that he was a publisher, a son-in-law of Dr. Gill, and the composer of several hymns. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872.

1865 - 1936 Person Name: L. E. J. Hymnal Number: 87 Author of "There is Power in the Blood" in Hymns and Spiritual Songs Number Two Pseudonyms: Mary Slater ================ Lewis Edgar Jones USA 1865-1936. Born in Yates City, IL, his family moved near Davenport, IA, where he lived on a farm until age 21. He went into business for awhile, and attended the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He was a classmate of evangelist, Billy Sunday. After graduating, he worked for the YMCA in Davenport, IA; Fort Worth, TX (1915, as general secretary); and Santa Barbara, CA (1925 as general secretary). Hymn writing was his avocation, and he wrote 200+, advising that many came from pastors’ sermons. He married Lora May Wright (1872-1950), and they had a daughter, Frances Ellen (1897-1982). Palmer Hartsough

1844 - 1932 Hymnal Number: 74 Author of "Forward!" in Hymns and Spiritual Songs Number Two Rv Palmer Hartsough USA 1844-1932. Born in Redford, MI, he attended Kalamazoo College and Michigan State Normal school (later MSU). He became an author, editor, lyricist, and librettist. After working as a traveling singing teacher in MI, IL, IA, OH, KY and TN, he opened a music studio in Rock Island, IL, around 1877, also directing music at a Baptist church there. In 1893, due to his poetic abilities, he moved to Cincinnati, OH, and joined the Fillmore Music Company, providing texts (over 1000) for their music. He also served as music director at the Bethel Mission and the 9th Street Baptist Church. He became a traveling song evangelist in 1903, and was ordained a Baptist minister in 1906, serving in Ontario, Canada, and MI from 1914 to 1927. He then returned to Plymouth, MI, where he lived the rest of his life. He never married, but was close to his two sisters, and wrote them a weekly letter for many years. With Fillmore Company he helped publish 20 songbooks. He died in Plymouth, MI. John Perry

Flora Kirkland

1862 - 1911 Hymnal Number: 124 Author of "Glory and Honor" in Hymns and Spiritual Songs Number Two Flora Kirkland was born in 1862 in Kentucky, before moving to Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from school she became a public school teacher for the seventh grade. She was a member of Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church for which she wrote a number of hymns. She was very active in the Wallabout Bay Mission in that neighborhood of Brooklyn. Most of Wallabout Bay would be filled in to make way for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She died 17 January 1911. Eliza Holmes Reed

1794 - 1867 Person Name: Elizabeth Reed Hymnal Number: 97 Author of "O Why Not To-Night?" in Hymns and Spiritual Songs Number Two Reed, Eliza, née Holmes, was born in London, March 4, 1794; married to the Rev. Andrew Reed in 1816; and died July 4, 1867. Mrs. Reed entered fully and earnestly into her husband's extensive charitable works. Her publications include Original Tales for Children; and The Mother's Manual for the Training of her Children, 1865. Her hymns, 20 in all, were contributed to her husband's collection, and were republished with his in the Wycliffe Chapel Supplement, 1872. They are only of average merit, and have not attained to a marked position. They include:— 1. Gracious Lord, as Thou hast bidden. Holy Baptism. 2. I would be Thine, 0 take my heart .
