Are All the Foes of Sion Fools?

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 39 hymnals First Line: Are all the foes of Sion fools Lyrics: 1 Are all the foes of Sion fools, Who thus devour her saints? Do they not know her Savior rules, And pities her complaints? 2 They shall be seized with sad surprise; For God’s revenging arm Scatters the bones of them that rise To do His children harm. 3 In vain the sons of Satan boast Of armies in array; When God has first despised their host They fall an easy prey. 4 O for a word from Zion’s king, Her captives to restore! Jacob with all his tribes shall sing, And Judah weep no more. Used With Tune: SONG 67 (Gibbons) Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

Springs and Streams No Longer Bless

Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Springs and streams no longer bless All the dry and thirsty land; Fertile fields in verdant dress God converts to desert sand; For that they who dwell therein Turn to wickedness and sin. 2. Once again the waters well, All the desert blossoms fair; There He makes the hungry dwell, There a city they prepare, Plant their vines and sow their fields, And the earth her increase yields. 3. Now He blesses them indeed, They are greatly multiplied; On the hills their cattle feed, Fast increasing, spreading wide; Then again they are brought low Through oppression, grief, and woe. 4. His contempt the princes taste: Driven out, they helpless fly, Wandering in the trackless waste; But He lifts the needy high, Where no evil shall annoy, And with children gives him joy. 5. When His righteous judgments come, Strong to bless and to destroy, All iniquity is dumb, All the righteous sing for joy; Who Jehovah wisely heed, In His works His mercy read. Scripture: Psalm 107 Used With Tune: BREAD OF HEAVEN Text Sources: The Psalter (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: The United Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1912), number 296

When Sinners See Their Lost Condition

Author: Magnus B. Landstad; Oluf H. Smeby Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 11 hymnals Lyrics: 1. When sinners see their lost condition And feel the pressing load of sin, And Jesus cometh on His mission To heal the sin-sick heart within, All grief must flee before His grace, And joy divine will take its place. 2. When Jesus enters meek and lowly To fill the home with sweetest peace; When hearts have felt His blessing holy And found from sin complete release, Then light and calm within shall reign And hearts divided love again. 3. When Jesus enters land and nation And moves the people with His love; When, yielding to His kind persuasion, Our hearts His truth and blessing prove, Then shall our life on earth be blest, The peace of God on us shall rest. 4. When Jesus comes—O blessèd story!— He works a change in heart and life; God’s kingdom comes with pow’r and glory To young and old, to man and wife; Thro’ sacrament and living Word, Faith, love, and hope are now conferred. 5. Then stilled are cries and lamentation, Then loosed is Satan’s every band; In death is hope and consolation, The soul is safe in Jesus’ hand. When we shall walk through death’s dark vale, His rod and staff shall never fail. 6. Oh, may He soon to every nation Find entrance where He is unknown, With life and light and full salvation, That heathendom may be o’erthrown And healing to the hearts may come In heathen land and Christian home! Our Guilt Do We Confess Today

Author: Richard W. Adams Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1. Our guilt do we confess today, Your law did we reject; So little truth and mercy here— Your Word sees no respect. 2. We swear, we lie, we kill and steal, See harlotry increase; We break restraint, and blood on blood, Ignore the law of peace. 3. Our land, it mourns, we waste away, For wisdom seek we not; Destruction will our portion be, If God we have forgot. 4. To crystals, stone, and gold we pray, Those worthless things we preach; Those sightless eyes, unhearing ears, In vain do we beseech. 5. We well deserve the charge You bring, Upon us lays the blame; Contentious, proud, we stumble on, Our glory turns to shame. 6. Show us that only in Your Word Do truth and mercy live; Send priests and prophets to instruct, And Your pure wisdom give. 7. Have mercy, Lord, reject us not, Draw us to seek Your face; Direct our feet and deeds to You, Restore us by Your grace. 8. Lord, melt these icy hearts of stone, Make us Your counsel seek, And sacrifice to You alone, With humble hearts and meek. Used With Tune: MARTYRDOM

Refrain: God’s tomorrow, God’s tomorrow, Every cloud will pass away At the dawning of that day; God’s tomorrow, no more sorrow, For I know that God’s tomorrow Will be brighter than today! 2 God’s tomorrow is a day of greeting: We shall see the Savior’s face; And our longing hearts await the meeting In that holy, happy place. [Refrain] 3 God’s tomorrow is a day of glory: We shall wear the crown of life; Sing thro’ countless years love’s old, old story, Free forever from all strife. Come and Hear the Words of Jesus

Author: Susan H. Peterson Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Come and hear the words of Jesus, who holds the seven stars Lyrics: 1. Come and hear the words of Jesus, who holds the seven stars And who walks among the seven lamps of gold. He says, I know all your actions, you’ve tested wicked men, You have persevered, though hardships o’er you rolled. Yet I have this against you: you’ve left your first true love. Now repent, or I’ll remove you from your place. He who overcomes will eat from God’s precious tree of life. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. 2. Come and hear the words of Jesus, who is the first and last And who died and then came back to life again. He says, I know your afflictions; you’re poor, yet you are rich. You’ve endured much slander from the tongues of men. Don’t be afraid of suffering; be faithful unto death, And you will the crown of life receive one day. He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. 3. Come and hear the words of Jesus, who holds the two-edged sword; He says, You’ve been true and not renounced your faith. Yet I have some things against you: you’ve been enticed to sin; Immorality and idols you’ve embraced. You must repent, or I’ll come and fight you with My sword. Those who win will hidden manna have always. Overcomers will be given a new name cut in stone. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. 4. Come and hear the words of Jesus, whose eyes are blazing fire. He says, I know all your love and faith and deeds. You are doing more than ever, yet still I bring this charge, For you tolerate a teacher who misleads. I’ll make you suffer greatly, unless you now repent. You will know that I search hearts and will repay. But I’ll give each overcomer authority to rule. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. 5. Come and hear the words of Jesus, who holds the seven stars. He says, People think you’re living, but you’re dead. You must wake up now and strengthen what’s left before it dies, For your deeds are not complete, My God has said. Obey what you have heard now, or I’ll come like a thief. He who overcomes will walk with Me always. I’ll acknowledge him in Heaven; his name I’ll ne’er erase. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. 6. Come and hear the words of Jesus, who’s true and holds the key; What He opens or He shuts will stay the same. He says, See, I’ve placed before you a door that’s open wide, For you’ve kept My word and not denied My name. I love you; now be steadfast, so none will take your crown. Overcomers will great pillars be some day. I will write My new name on them, the name of My God too. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. 7. Come and hear the words of Jesus, God’s witness, faithful, true. He says, You are neither cold, nor are you hot. So because you’re lukewarm only, I’ll spit you from My mouth, For you think you’re rich and do not know you’re not. Buy gold from Me and white clothes and salve so you can see. Here I’m at the door, and now My voice I raise. He who overcomes will with Me sit down upon My throne. He who has an ear, hear what the Spirit says. Used With Tune: SALVATION (Hays)

Come unto Me (Peterson)

Author: Susan H. Peterson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O weary one, weighed down by care Lyrics: 1. O weary one, weighed down by care, Come unto Me and rest. Cast all your burdens at My feet, And you will be refreshed. Come unto Me, come unto Me, For I am meek in heart. Take up My yoke and learn from Me, And let your cares depart. 2. Come claim My strength, you faint in heart And you who have no might. I am the everlasting God; Through Me you can take flight. Mount up, mount up on eagles’ wings, Soar upward to the sky. Draw from My reservoir of power, A limitless supply. 3. I am the Vine, you’re just a branch; You must remain in Me. Apart from Me you’ll bear no fruit; Your life will empty be. Remain in Me, remain in Me, And I’ll remain in you. By this will God be glorified; You’ll be My follower true. 4. And never tire of doing good; Someday there’ll be reward. For at the proper time you’ll reap A harvest for your Lord. So don’t give up, don’t e’er give up, Do good to all mankind. Especially love God’s family and Eternal life you’ll find. Used With Tune: MATERNA
