Sir John Beaumont

1583 - 1627 Hymnal Number: 315 Author of "Sweet Hope is soveraigne comfort of our life" in The Churchman's Treasury of Song Beaumont, Sir John, elder brother of Francis Beaumont, the dramatic writer, born in 1582, and educated at Oxford. In 1626 he was created a baronet by King Charles I., died in 1628. His writings include, The Crown of Thorns, a poem in 8 books (not now known to exist); Bosworth Field and other Poems, 1629; and Poems on religious and political subjects. He is known to modern hymnals through one or two pieces only. His Poems have been reprinted by Dr. Grosart in his Fuller Worthies Library. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1821 - 1859 Hymnal Number: 154 Author of "Awake, thou wintry earth" in The Churchman's Treasury of Song This poem [Awake thou wintry earth] was first printed in the second edition of Fosbery’s “Poems for the Sick and Suffering” (Rivington, 1850). Mr. [Thomas] Blackburne was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford, and after some time spent in literary work on the Athenæum, he took orders. 1752 - 1770 Person Name: Thomas Chatterton Hymnal Number: 372 Author of "O God, Whose thunder shakes the sky" in The Churchman's Treasury of Song Chatterton, Thomas, was born at Bristol, Nov. 20, 1752. He received his early education at Colston's charity school in that city, and then was articled to an attorney. In April, 1770, he proceeded to London, where he earned but little through his literary labours. Overcome at last by poverty and distress, he poisoned himself in August the same year. He was buried at St. Andrew's, Holborn. His Miscellanies in Prose and Verse were published posthumously in 1778. From this work two hymns have come into common use:— 1. Almighty Framer of the skies. (1768.) Christmas. 2. O God, Whose thunder shakes the sky. (1768.) Resignation. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)
