Ina Duley Ogdon

1872 - 1964 Person Name: Ina Dudley Ogdon Hymnal Number: 15 Author of "Jesus First" in Greater Christian Hymns Ogdon, Ina Duley. (Rossville, Illinois, 1872--May 18, 1964, Toledo, Ohio). Disciples of Christ. Granddaughter of a Methodist minister, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William W. Duley. Married James Ogdon. She wrote: "My father went with my mother to her church after his marriage to her, so I was brought up in the church of the Disciples of Christ." She wrote over three thousand hymns, anthems, cantatas, and miscellaneous verse. Her hymns include "Brighten the corner where you are," 1912; "Carry your cross with a smile," 1916; "My Lord abides;" "When you know Jesus too;" "Tell Jesus;" "Lighten the burden for someone;" "I have been saved," Her first hymn was "Open wide the window." Composer Charles Gabriel wrote, "Loved by thousands who have sung her hymns, she shrinks from celebrity in the knowledge that her songs are God-given and that without Him she could do nothing." Alfred Barratt

1879 - 1968 Hymnal Number: 48 Author of "He's My Dearest Friend" in Greater Christian Hymns Barratt, Alfred. (New Springs, Wigan, Lancashire, England, October 25, 1879--December, 1968). Coming to the United States as a young man, he studied at Gordon College, Massachusetts, and Newton Theological Seminary, Mass. He was ordained in December, 1913, by the Baptists in Connecticut, then by the Wheeling WV Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in the USA, in 1924. He was pastor of Dallas, West Virginia, then of a series of churches in the Presbytery of Clarion, Pennsylvania. In 1937 he was awarded the Doctor of Literature degree by Bob Jones College. On November 26, 1962, he wrote the undersigned: "For 39 long years I have labored hard and steady writing sermons, children's story sermons, and hymns. Up to the present day I have written 4,477 hymns. 80 percent of my sermons are published in books and magazines." --William J. Reynolds, DNAH Archives

Thomas O. Chisholm

1866 - 1960 Person Name: T. O. Chisholm Hymnal Number: 64 Author of "Make Me Pure" in Greater Christian Hymns Thomas O. Chisholm was born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. His boyhood was spent on a farm and in teaching district schools. He spent five years as editor of the local paper at Franklin. He was converted to Christianity at the age of 26 and soon after was business manager and office editor of the "Pentecostal Herald" of Louisville, Ky. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church South. His aim in writing was to incorporate as much as Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes. Lizzie De Armond

1847 - 1936 Person Name: Lizzie DeArmond Hymnal Number: 66 Author of "Keep Your Faith In Jesus" in Greater Christian Hymns Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns. Robert Harkness

1880 - 1961 Person Name: R. H. Hymnal Number: 107 Author of "Make A Full Surrender" in Greater Christian Hymns After attending a revival meeting by Reuben Torrey and Charles M. Alexander, Harkness became Alexander’s pianist. He came to Christ shortly thereafter (on a bicycle, he said), and made several round the world tours with Torrey and Alexander. Harkness was especially well known for his program The Music of the Cross, and as the author of correspondence courses in hymn playing. He wrote over 2,000 hymns and Gospel songs in his lifetime. James M. Black

1856 - 1938 Person Name: J. M. B. Hymnal Number: 165 Author of "His Love Is Mine" in Greater Christian Hymns James Milton Black USA 1856-1938 Born in South Hill, NY, Black was an American hymn composer, choir leader and Sunday school teacher. He worked, lived,and died in Williamsport, PA. An active member, he worked at the Pine Tree Methodist Episcopal Church there. He married Lucy Love Levan. He started his music career with John Howard of New York and Daniel B. Towner of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He edited a dozen gospel song books and wrote nearly 1500 songs. A. H. Ackley

1887 - 1960 Hymnal Number: 181 Author of "No Shadow Of Turning In Jesus" in Greater Christian Hymns Alfred Henry Ackley was born 21 January 1887 in Spring Hill, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest son of Stanley Frank Ackley and the younger brother of B. D. Ackley. His father taught him music and he also studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary in Maryland and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1914. He served churches in Pennsylvania and California. He also worked with the Billy Sunday and Homer Rodeheaver evangelist team and for Homer Rodeheaver's publishing company. He wrote around 1500 hymns. He died 3 July 1960 in Los Angeles. James Rowe

1865 - 1933 Hymnal Number: 193 Author of "The Day Will Come" in Greater Christian Hymns Pseudonym: James S. Apple. James Rowe was born in England in 1865. He served four years in the Government Survey Office, Dublin Ireland as a young man. He came to America in 1890 where he worked for ten years for the New York Central & Hudson R.R. Co., then served for twelve years as superintendent of the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society. He began writing songs and hymns about 1896 and was a prolific writer of gospel verse with more than 9,000 published hymns, poems, recitations, and other works. W. C. Martin

1864 - 1914 Person Name: C. W. Martin Hymnal Number: 263 Author of "Love" in Greater Christian Hymns Rv William Clark Martin USA 1864-1914. Born at Hightstown, NJ, he graduated from the Peddie Institute in Hightstown in 1884, and in 1891 from the Crozer Theological Seminary, Upland, PA. He became minister of the Grace Baptist Church, Camden, NJ,(1891-1894); Noank Baptist Church, Noank, CT (1894-1900); Tabernacle Baptist Church, New Albany, IN (1902-1904); First Baptist Church, Seymour, IN (1902-1904); First Baptist Church, Bluffton, IN (1904-1909); Grace Baptist Church, Somerville, MA (1909-1912); and First Baptist Church, Fort Myers, FL (1912-1914). In 1891 he married Euretta (Etta) May Wilcox, and they had at least three children (no names found). He penned many hymn lyrics. He died of heart failure at his farm in Rialto, FL. John Perry

John R. Clements

1868 - 1946 Hymnal Number: 298 Author of "I'll Gaze On His Face" in Greater Christian Hymns John R. Clements was born in County Armagh, Ireland 28 November 1868 and was brought to the United States at the age of two years. He worked at the age of thirteen as a retail grocery clerk and had a successful wholesale grocery business. He began writing poetry when he was young.
