Birdie Bell

Hymnal Number: 159 Author of "Just One Touch" in Exalted Praise C. Louise Bell, also known a Birdie Bell, was born, raised and lived in New York city. She began writing hymns when she was sixteen years old. She is the author of more than 500 hymns, 200 religious poems, and 200 Christmas and Easter lyrics, as well as short stories, and articles. She wrote under the name of Birdie Bell, which is what her family called her. 1838 - 1901 Person Name: Rev. H. R. Haweis Hymnal Number: 87 Author of "The Homeland!" in Exalted Praise Born: April 3, 1838, Egham, Surrey, England. Died: January 29, 1901, St. Marylebone, London, England. Haweis’ father was John Oliver Willyams Haweis, Canon of Chichester. Hugh attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and after graduation served under Garibaldi in the Italian war of independence. He was ordained in 1861 and was curate at Bethnal Green, Westminster and Stepney. In 1866, he became perpetual curate at St. James, Marylebone. George Rundle Prynne

1818 - 1903 Person Name: George R. Prynne Hymnal Number: 5 Author of "Jesus, Meek and Gentle" in Exalted Praise George Rundle Prynne studied at S. Catherine's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. 1839, M.A. 1861. He was ordained Deacon in 1841, and Priest in 1842. He afterwards became Curate of S. Andrew's, Clifton, and entered upon his present incumbency of S. Peter's, Plymouth, in 1848. He has published some sermons and manuals. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872. ================ Prynne, George Rundle, M.A., son of John Allen Prynne, was born at West Looe, Cornwall, Aug. 23, 1818, and educated at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, B.A., 1839; M.A. 1861. He took Holy Orders in 1841, and became Vicar of St. Peter's, Plymouth, in 1848. He has published Parochial Sermons, 1846; Plain Parochial Sermons, 1856; another series, 1876; The Dying Soldier's Visions, and Other Poems and Hymns, 1881, &c. He also published Hymnal suited for the Services of the Church, 1858. His most popular hymn is “Jesu, meek and gentle,” p. 591, ii. His hymns "The day is done; O God the Son" (Evening), and "Thy glory fills the heavens" (The Glory of the Father), have also been included in a few collections. Stephen Jenks

1772 - 1856 Hymnal Number: 237 Composer of "COMMUNION" in Exalted Praise Born: March 17, 1772, Glocester, Rhode Island. Died: June 3, 1856, Thompson, Ohio. Buried: Maple Grove Cemetery, Thompson, Ohio. During his life, Jenks moved from town to town, living in Ridgefield and New Canaan, Connecticut; Pound Ridge, New York; and Providence, Rhode Island; finally settling in Thompson, Ohio, in 1829. After moving to Ohio, he became a farmer and a maker of percussion instruments. William H. Clark

1854 - 1925 Person Name: Wm. H. Clark Hymnal Number: 167 Author of "Jesus Near" in Exalted Praise Clark, William Henry. (Racine, Wisconsin, April 8, 1854--November 8, 1925, Rome, New York). Free Methodist. In his infancy, his parents returned to their former home in New York State, where his mother soon died, and his father married a close friend of hers, who forecast, after William's conversion in 1873, that one day he would be a bishop. He served the Susquehanna Conference of his denomination as a pastor and district superintendent from 1876 until 1919, when his stepmother's prediction came true. Meanwhile, he had been a member of the joint commission of the Free and Wesleyan Methodist Churches which compiled the Hymnal of 1910, and contributed some items to it.
