1828 - 1909 Person Name: Rev. J. K. Alwood Hymnal Number: 53 Author of "The Unclouded Day" in Favorite Songs and Hymns Alwood, Josiah Kelley. (Harrison County, Ohio, July 15, 1828--January 13, 1909, Morenci, Michigan). Ordained by the United Brethren in Christ, he spent many years as a circuit rider, traveling on horseback to his many appointments. He would be gone from his family for weeks at a time while he held revival meetings and lectured on Christian doctrine. Later, he became a presiding elder in the North Ohio Conference and was a delegate to several general conferences of his church. Always a staunch supporter of the original constitution of his denomination, he was a delegate to the general conference at the time of the separation of the church into two groups at York, Pennsylvania, in 1889. --William J. H. L. Hastings

1831 - 1899 Hymnal Number: 266 Author of "Shall We Meet?" in Favorite Songs and Hymns Hastings, Horace Lorenzo, was born at Blandford, Mass., Nov. 26, 1831; commenced writing hymns, and preaching, in his 17th year, and laboured as an evangelist in various parts of the U. S. In 1866 he established The Christian, a monthly paper, in which many of his hymns have appeared, and in 1865 the Scriptural Tract Repository in Boston. He published Social Hymns, Original and Selected, Boston, 1865; Songs of Pilgrimage, a Hymnal for the Churches of Christ, Part i., 1880; and in August, 1886, the same completed, to tho extent of 1533 hymns, 450 of which are original and signed "H." The best known of these is "Shall we meet beyond the river," written in N. Y. city, 1858, and lately published as a leaflet in 14 stanzas of 8 lines. The text in Gospel Hymns and elsewhere consists of the 1st half of stanzas i., iv., xi. and ix. The Hastings Birthday Book, extracts from his prose writings, appeared 1886. [Rev. F. M. George C. Hugg

1848 - 1907 Person Name: Geo. C. Hugg Hymnal Number: 274 Composer of "[There's not a friend like the lowly Jesus]" in Favorite Songs and Hymns George Crawford Hugg USA 1848-1907. Born near Haddonfield, NJ, he became choirmaster at the Berlin, NJ, Presbyterian Church at age 12. At age 14 he published his first song, “Walk in the light”, which became very popular. He married Anne E Ketchum, and they had a daughter, Evangeline. He served as choirmaster of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and also the Broad Street and Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Churches there. He was also closely associated with the Harper Memorial Presbyterian Church there. He was a prolific composer with over 2000 works, publishing 18 books of revival and Sunday school music, and 90 songs for special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.). He died in Philadelphia, PA. Thomas Augustine Arne

Lizzie De Armond

1847 - 1936 Person Name: Lizzie DeArmond Hymnal Number: 41 Author of "Good Night and Good Morning" in Favorite Songs and Hymns Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns. Herbert Buffum

1879 - 1939 Hymnal Number: 183 Author of "I'm Going Through" in Favorite Songs and Hymns Herbert Buffum was born in La Fayette, Illinois 13 November 1879. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He started preaching at seventeen years of age. He did city mission work up and down the Pacific Coast and later in small towns in Kansas. He began publishing hymns at the age of eighteen. William M. Golden

Died: May 13, 1934, in a traffic accident near Eupora, Mississippi. Buried: Spring Valley Cemetery #2, Mathiston, Mississippi. Son of James and Camella Hood Golding (his surname changed later), it is said he wrote most of his songs while serving an eight-year sentence in the state penitentiary.
