1866 - 1949 Person Name: Rev. J. Hoffman Batten Hymnal Number: 36 Author of "When Jesus Came My Way" in Sermons in Song James Hoffman Batten was a Methodist minister. He served the West Grove Methodist Church in Asbury Park, the Matawan Methodist Church, and other Methodist churches in New Jersey and Illinois. He later left the Methodist Church and joined the Congregationalist Church because he agreed with the teachings of the Congregationalists. 1832 - 1896 Person Name: Rev. W. S. McKenzie, D. D. Hymnal Number: 4 Author of "Surely I Come Quickly" in Sermons in Song McKenzie, William Scott, D.D., son of Scottish parents, was born at Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Feb. 29, 1832. Entering the Baptist ministry, he held several pastorates until 1873, when he became district secretary for New England of the American Baptist Missionary Union. His hymn "Ye mortals come, adore the Lord" (Passiontide), is in The Canadian Baptist Hymnal, 1888. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) =============== McKenzie, W.
