James Hoffman Batten was a Methodist minister. He served the West Grove Methodist Church in Asbury Park, the Matawan Methodist Church, and other Methodist churches in New Jersey and Illinois. He later left the Methodist Church and joined the Congregationalist Church because he agreed with the teachings of the Congregationalists. He died in Anaheim, California
