My Song Is Love Unknown

Author: Samuel Crossman (1624?-1683) Meter: 6.6.6.6.4.4.4.4 Appears in 129 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:1-11 Lyrics: 1 My song is love unknown, my Savior’s love to me, love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh, and die? 2 He came from his blest throne salvation to bestow, but all made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know; but O my friend, my friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend. 3 Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing, resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. 4 Why, what has my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease, and 'gainst him rise. 5 They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free. 6 Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine! This is my friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Topics: Holy Week (Good Friday) Used With Tune: LOVE UNKNOWN

Olearius, 1611-1684 Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7.8.8 Appears in 128 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:5 First Line: "Comfort, comfort now my people Lyrics: 1 "Comfort, comfort now my people; tell of peace!" so says our God. Comfort those who sit in darkness mourning under sorrow's load. To God's people now proclaim that God's pardon waits for them! Tell them that their war is over; God will reign in peace forever! 2 For the herald's voice is crying in the desert far and near, calling us to true repentance since the Kingdom now is here. Oh, that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way! Let the valleys rise to meet him, and the hills bow down to greet him! 3 Straight shall be what long was crooked, and the rougher places plain! Let your hearts be true and humble, as befits his holy reign! For the glory of the Lord now on earth is shed abroad, and all flesh shall see the token that God's word is never broken. Author: Beddome Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 86 hymnals Scripture: Romans 5:1 Lyrics: 1 God's holy law, transgressed, Speaks nothing but despair; Burdened with guilt, with grief oppressed, We find no comfort there. 2 Not all our groans and tears, Nor works which we have done, Nor vows, nor promises, nor prayers, Can e'er for sin atone. 3 Relief alone is found In Jesus' precious blood: 'Tis this that heals the mortal wound, And reconciles to God. 4 High lifted on the cross, The spotless victim dies: This is salvation's only source, Hence all our hopes arise.
