267. Blessed Were the Eyes That Truly

1 Blessed were the eyes that truly
Here on earth beheld the Lord,
Happy were the ears that duly
Listen'd to His precious word
Who reveal'd the wondrous story
Of God’s mercy, truth, and glory.

2 Kings and prophets long with yearning
Pray'd to see His day appear,
Angels with desire were burning
To behold the golden year,
When God’s light and grace should quicken
All that sin and death hath stricken.

3 He who, light and life revealing,
By His Spirit stills our want,
He who broken hearts is healing
By His cup and at the font,
Jesus, Fount of joy incessant,
Is with light and life now present.

4 Tho' the world can not perceive Him,
He is near to yearning hearts,
And to all who here believe HIm
His blest word sweet grace imparts,
Making bright the gloomy spaces,
Paradise of desert places.

5 Eyes in deepest darkness blinded
May now see His glory bright,
Hearts, perverse and carnal minded,
May obtain His Spirit’s light
When contrite and sorely yearning
They in faith to Him are turning.

6 Blessed are the eyes that truly
Here on earth behold the Lord,
Happy are the ears that duly
Listen to His blessed word.
When His words our spirit nourish
Shall His kingdom in us flourish.
