The Homecoming

When we leave earth's shore

Author: Johnson Oatman
Tune: [When we leave earth's shore]
Published in 2 hymnals

Representative Text

1 When we leave earth’s shore
To return no more,
We will sail for that city bright and fair;
Where our friends we’ll meet,
And our loved ones greet,
At the great home-coming over there.

Refrain:
We are going in the morning bright and fair,
To the great home-coming over there;
We shall hear the music chime
Of the heavenly choir divine
At the great home-coming over there!

2 When our friends passed o’er
To that unseen shore,
How our hearts were filled with deep despair!
But beyond death’s sea
We’ll united be
At the great home-coming over there. [Refrain]

3 There no pain we’ll know,
There no tears will flow,
In that land we’ll never know a care;
But we’ll hand in hand
With our loved ones stand,
At the great home-coming over there. [Refrain]

4 So we’ll quell our fears
And we’ll dry our tears,
And we’ll watch for the morning bright and fair,
Then, through God’s own grace,
We will fill our place
At the great home-coming over there. [Refrain]

Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton… Go to person page >
