Representative Text

1 To my blessèd Lord and Savior,
As He walks before me here,
I am getting nearer, nearer every day!
And He says I shall be like Him
When before Him I appear,
And I’m getting nearer, nearer every day.

Refrain:
Every day, praise the Lord, I’m getting nearer,
And the way, praise the Lord, is getting clearer;
From my Lord no more I’ll roam,
For I see the lights of home,
And I’m getting nearer, nearer every day.

2 To the pure and perfect stature
Of our great and living Head,
I am getting nearer, nearer every day!
To the perfect will of Jesus
In the way that I am led,
I am getting nearer, nearer every day. [Refrain]

3 To the time when I shall gladly
Lay my cross and banners down,
I am getting nearer, nearer every day;
To the time when from my Savior
I’ll receive a robe and crown,
I am getting nearer, nearer every day. [Refrain]

4 To that blest eternal city
That lies just across the foam,
I am getting nearer, nearer every day;
Often thro’ faith’s open vision
I can see the spires of home,
And I’m getting nearer, nearer every day. [Refrain]

Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. His father was an excellent singer, and it always delighted the son to sit by his side and hear him sing the songs of the church. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton… Go to person page >
