Arthur’s parents were George Deter and Sarah Dye Deter. He came to Christ at age 20, while attending Normal School in Parsons, Kansas. He attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas (1889-94), and William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri (1895-96). He spent one year at Louisville Seminary and three at Rochester Seminary, graduating from Rochester in May 1891. Judson W. Van DeVenter was born 15 December 1855 on a farm near the village of Dundee, Michigan. He was educated in the country and village schools, and at Hillsdale College. He later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. He wrote about 100 hymns.
