Arthur’s parents were George Deter and Sarah Dye Deter. He came to Christ at age 20, while attending Normal School in Parsons, Kansas. He attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas (1889-94), and William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri (1895-96). He spent one year at Louisville Seminary and three at Rochester Seminary, graduating from Rochester in May 1891. The Foreign Mission Board for Brazil appointed him in 1891, and he spent four decades as a missionary in Rio de Janiero. His works include:
