Med sorgen og klagen hold maade

Representative Text

1 Med Sorgen og Klagen hold Maade,
Lad Guds Ord dig trøste og raade,
Lad Hjertet i Sorgen ei synde!
Ved Døden vi Livet begynde.

2 Vi indsvøbe Liget med Taare,
Og lægge det stille paa Baare;
Men Svøbet og Baaren betyder:
Han slumrer, til Dagen frembryder.

3 Lad Hjerte og Øie kun briste,
Og Legemet lægges i Kiste,
Den Time ei borte skal blive,
Da Herren det kalder til Live.

4 Ved Døden al Ynde berøvet
De Legemer blandes med Støvet,
Men herlig opreises de skulle
Af Livs-Aand og Yndighed fulde.

5 Se Kornet i Jorden hin sorte!
Det synes saa visselig borte,
Min Stunden dog kommer, det skyder,
I gyldneste Grøde frembryder.

6 O Jord! vi en Gave dig skjænke,
Med Graad i dig Skjød vi den sænke;
En dyrebar Sæd du modtager,
Vi derfor dig kalde Guds Ager.

7 En Sjæl i den Støvhytte bode,
En Sjæl, som paa Frelseren trode,
Som længtes med Haab mod der Høie,
Med Gud og hans Glæde for Øie.

8 Tag varlig det guld udi Gjemme!
Gud vil ei den Bolig forglemme,
Hvor Aanden har sukket og smilet,
Han kræver det, naar det faar hvilet.

9 Snart skue vi Dagen at gylde,
Da Kristus vort Haab vil opfylde,
Ei Jorden dem mere skal dølge,
Guds Villeder glade ham følge.

Author: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius

Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, "The Christian Pindar" was born in northern Spain, a magistrate whose religious convictions came late in life. His subsequent sacred poems were literary and personal, not, like those of St. Ambrose, designed for singing. Selections from them soon entered the Mozarabic rite, however, and have since remained exquisite treasures of the Western churches. His Cathemerinon liber, Peristephanon, and Psychomachia were among the most widely read books of the Middle Ages. A concordance to his works was published by the Medieval Academy of America in 1932. There is a considerable literature on his works. --The Hymnal 1940 Companion… Go to person page >
