Je Veux Exalter La Gloire

Representative Text

1 Je veux exalter la gloire
Et l’amour du Créateur!
C’est en lui que je veux croire,
Il est mon puissant Sauveur!
Il protège avec tendresse
Celui qui se donne à lui;
Il est mon unique appui;
Je veux le chercher sans cesse.
Tout finit, mais sa bonté
Dure pour l’éternité.

2 Ah! comment douter qu’il m’aime?
De son Fils il me fait don;
Il l’expose à la mort même,
Pour assurer mon pardon.
O mystère impénétrable,
Insondable jusqu’au fond!
C’est l’amour le plus profond,
Seul parfait, seul véritable,
Tout finit, mais sa bonté
Dure pour l’éternité.

3 Son Esprit qui me console
M’est donné pour conducteur,
Il inspire la parole
Qui m’éclaire dans l’erreur,
Il fait naître dans mon âme
Espérance, amour et foi;
Et pour observer sa loi,
De sa charité m’enflamme.
Tout finit, mais sa bonté
Dure pour l’éternité.

4 O Dieu, puisque ta tendresse
Sans limite s’offre à moi,
Je réponds dans l’allégresse,
Élevant mon âme à toi,
En mon cœur répands ta grâce.
Rends-moi ferme et confiant,
Dans l’attente du moment
Où nous verrons face à face,
Accueillis dans ta bonté
Et dans ton éternité.

He served the Lutheran parish of Mittenwalde near Berlin (1651-1657) and the great St. Nicholas' Church in Berlin (1657-1666). Friederich William, the Calvinist elector, had issued an edict that forbade the various Protestant groups to fight each other. Although Gerhardt did not want strife between the churches, he refused to comply with the edict because he thought it opposed the Lutheran "Formula of Concord," which condemned some Calvinist doctrines.
