Mercy and Judgment Are My Song

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 48 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Mercy and judgment are my song; And since they both to Thee belong, My gracious God, my righteous king, To Thee my songs and vows I bring. 2. If I am raised to bear the sword, I’ll take my counsels from Thy Word; Thy justice and Thy heavenly grace Shall be the pattern of my ways. 3. Let wisdom all my actions guide And let my God with me reside; No wicked thing shall dwell with me Which may provoke Thy jealousy. 4. No sons of slander, rage, and strife Shall be companions of my life; The haughty look, the heart of pride, Within my doors shall ne’er abide. 5. I’ll search the land, and raise the just To posts of honor, wealth, and trust; The men that work Thy holy will Shall be my friends and favorites still. 6. In vain shall sinners hope to rise By flattering or malicious lies; And while the innocent I guard, The bold offender shan’t be spared. 7. The impious crew, that factious band, Shall hide their heads or quit the land; And all that break the public rest, Where I have power, shall be suppressed. Vain Man, On Foolish Pleasures Bent

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals First Line: Vain man on foolish pleasures bent Lyrics: 1 Vain man on foolish pleasures bent, Prepares for his own punishment; What pains, what loathsome maladies, From luxury and lust arise! 2 The drunkard feels his vitals waste, Yet drowns his health to please his taste; Till all his active powers are lost, And fainting life draws near the dust. 3 The glutton groans, and loathes to eat, His soul abhors delicious meat; Nature, with heavy loads oppressed, Would yield to death to be released. 4 Then how the frighted sinners fly, To God for help with earnest cry! He hears their groans, prolongs their breath, And saves them from approaching death. 5 No medicines could effect the cure So quick, so easy, or so sure: The deadly sentence God repeals, He sends His sovereign Word and heals. 6 O may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! And let their thankful offerings prove How they adore their maker’s love. Used With Tune: QUEEN'S CROSS Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719
