Fair Mount Where Jesus Knelt And Prayed

Author: Harriet M. Kimball Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Fair mount where Jesus knelt and prayed, What splendor crowned thy holy crest When to His followers He revealed The Godhead they by faith confessed! 2 Bright as the sun His face they saw, White as the light His garments gleamed; Transfigured He transfigured all The place whereon His radiance streamed. 3 With earth so far, and Heav’n so near What wonder they were fain to stay; And Moses and Elias came By that great vision rapt as they! 4 What wonder, while with them He spake And overhead the cloud appeared And from its glory came the voice, That they who heard it greatly feared! 5 The glory waned, the saints of old Departed by the ways unknown. And looking up, the prostrate three Beheld their blessèd Lord alone. 6 No more that vision may return, The cloud appear, the voice be heard; But by that one transcendent scene The heart of faith is ever stirred. 7 And though we see Thee not, O Lord, Thy presence faithful souls perceive, And blessèd they, as Thou hast said. Who have not seen and yet believe. Used With Tune: DEPAUW Text Sources: Poems (Boston: Little, Brown, 1911)

God of the Seas!

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 41 hymnals First Line: God of the seas! Thy thundering voice Lyrics: 1. God of the seas! Thy thundering voice Makes all the roaring waves rejoice, And one soft word of Thy command Can sink them silent in the sand. 2. If but a Moses wave Thy rod, The sea divides and owns its God; The stormy floods their Maker knew, And let His chosen armies through. 3. The scaly flocks amidst the sea, To Thee, their Lord, a tribute pay; The meanest fish that swims the flood Leaps up, and means a praise to God. 4. The larger monsters of the deep On Thy commands attendance keep; By Thy permission sport and play, And cleave along their foaming way. 5. If God His voice of tempest rears, Leviathan lies still and fears; Anon he lifts his nostrils high, And spouts the ocean to the sky. 6. How is Thy glorious power adored Amidst these watery nations, Lord! Yet the bold men that trace the seas, Bold men, refuse their Maker’s praise! 7. What scenes of miracles they see, And never tune a song to Thee! While on the flood they safely ride, They curse the hand that smoothes the tide! 8. Anon they plunge in watery graves, And some drink death among the waves; Yet the surviving crew blaspheme, Nor own the God that rescued them. 9. O for some signal of Thine hand! Shake all the seas, Lord, shake the land; Great Judge! descend, lest men deny That there’s a God that rules the sky. Easter Flowers

Author: Myra G. Plantz, 1856-1914 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: No bloom of spring had dared to lift Lyrics: 1. No bloom of spring had dared to lift Its head above the frozen ground, In snow-wrapped forests not a gift For Easter beauty could be found. 2. No gold had I for lilies white To make Christ’s temple sweet and fair, Nor roses whose rich perfume might Rise up in incense with my prayer. 3. And as I sorrowed that my love For my dear Lord could not be shown, I slept and dreamed I bent above The fairest blossoms ever known. 4. It was the garden of the King Where angels gathered all the flowers That were His Easter offering Upon this blessèd earth of ours. 5. Alas, no gift of mine, I cried, Will bloom this year above the skies! Then spoke an angel by my side, “Not in the flower the offering lies. 6. “A holy thought, a lowly prayer Some sad heart cheered and comforted, Will live here as a lily fair When all the earthborn flowers are dead. 7. The sweetest blossoms here were made By deeds of self-forgetful love. Go, give Christ’s needy children aid, And Easter buds will bloom above. Great God of Abraham!

Author: Thomas Cotterill Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: Great God of Abraham! hear our prayer Lyrics: 1. Great God of Abraham! hear our prayer Let Abraham’s seed Thy mercy share; O may they now at length return, And look on Him they pierced, and mourn. 2. Remember Jacob’s flock of old; Bring home the wanderers to Thy fold; Remember too Thy promised word, Israel at last shall seek the Lord. 3. Though outcasts still, estranged from Thee, Cut off from their own olive tree; Why should they longer such remain? For Thou canst graft them in again. 4. Lord, put Thy law within their hearts, And write it in their inward parts; The veil of darkness rend in two, Which hides Messiah from their view. 5. Oh! haste the day, foretold so long, When Jew and Greek, a glorious throng, One house shall seek, one prayer shall pour, And one Redeemer shall adore! Used With Tune: DEPAUW

O Lord, Our Nation's Help And Friend

Author: Benjamin Beddome, 1717-1795 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O Lord, our nation’s help and friend Lyrics: 1 O Lord, our nation’s help and friend, Thy Churchʼs shield until the end; Protect us with Thy mighty hand, Guard our belovèd native land. 2 From Thy high throne above the skies, Behold what wicked men devise; Avert, we pray, the threatened storm, And foil the monstrous schemes they form. 3 Let thunders roar, impress with fear: May they Thine awful power revere; And learn from Thine uplifted rod, Our country still is dear to God. 4 O Thou, whose rule and sovereign sway All things in Heav’n and earth obey, Abase the proud, exalt the poor, Let sinners tremble, saints adore. 5 For Jesusʼ sake, that mighty name, Clothe all our enemies with shame; Our thankful voices then shall raise Loud songs to our deliverer’s praise. Lord, I Am Thine

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 102 hymnals First Line: Lord, I am Thine; but Thou wilt prove Lyrics: 1. Lord, I am Thine; but Thou wilt prove My faith, my patience, and my love: When men of spite against me join, They are the sword, the hand is Thine. 2. Their hope and portion lies below: ’Tis all the happiness they know, ’Tis all they seek; they take their shares, And leave the rest among their heirs. 3. What sinners value I resign; Lord, ’tis enough that Thou art mine: I shall behold Thy blissful face, And stand complete in righteousness. 4. This life’s a dream, an empty show; But the bright world to which I go Hath joys substantial and sincere: When shall I wake and find me there? 5. O glorious hour! O bless’d abode! I shall be near and like my God! And flesh and sin no more control The sacred pleasures of the soul. 6. My flesh shall slumber in the ground Till the last trumpet’s joyful sound; Then burst the chains in sweet surprise, And in my Savior’s image rise. Thou Art, O God! A Spirit Pure

Author: John Needham Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 46 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Thou art, O God! a Spirit pure, Invisible to mortal eyes; Th’immortal, and th’eternal King, The great, the good, the only wise. 2 Whilst nature changes, and her works Corrupt, decay, dissolve and die, Thy essence pure no change shall see, Secure of immortality. 3 Thou great invisible! what hand Can draw Thy image spotless fair? To what in Heaven, to what on earth Can men th’immortal King compare? 4 Let stupid heathens frame their gods Of gold and silver, wood and stone; Ours is the God that made the heavens, Jehovah He, and God alone. 5 My soul, Thy purest homage pay, In truth and spirit Him adore; More shall this please than sacrifice, Than outward forms delight Him more. Author: Reginald Heber, 1783-1826 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 11 hymnals First Line: Oh Thou, whom neither time nor space Lyrics: 1 Oh Thou, whom neither time nor space Can circle in, unseen, unknown, Nor faith in boldest flight can trace, Save through Thy Spirit and Thy Son! 2 And Thou that from Thy bright abode, To us in mortal weakness shown, Didst graft the manhood into God, Eternal, co-eternal Son! 3 And Thou, whose unction from on high By comfort, light, and love is known! Who, with the Parent Deity, Dread Spirit, art for ever one! 4 Great First and Last, Thy blessing give! And grant us faith, Thy gift alone, To love and praise Thee while we live, And do whate’er Thou wouldst have done!
