W. A. Ogden

1841 - 1897 Person Name: William A. Ogden Author of "Ring Out the Bells for Christmas" in The Cyber Hymnal William Augustine Ogden USA 1841-1897. Born at Franklin County, OH, his family moved to IN when he was age six. He studied music in local singing schools at age 8, and by age 10 could read church music fairly well. Later, he could write out a melody by hearing it sung or played. He enlisted in the American Civil War in the 30th IN Volunteer Infantry. During the war he organized a male choir which became well known throughout the Army of the Cumberland. After the war, he returned home, resumed music study, and taught school. He married Jennie V Headington, and they had two children: Lowell and Marian. He worked for the Iowa Normal School, Toledo Public School System. Among his teachers: Lowell Mason, Thomas Hastings, E E Baily and B F Baker, president of the Boston Music School. He wrote many hymns, both lyrics and/or music. He later issued his first song book, “The silver song” (1870). It became quite popular, selling 500,000 copies. He went on to publish other song books. Ogden also taught music at many schools in the U S and Canada. In 1887 he became superintendent of music in the public schools of Toledo, OH. His works include: “New silver songs for Sunday school” (1872), “Crown of life” (1875), “Notes of victory” (1885), “The way of life” (1886), “Gathering jewels” (1886). Author of "Ring Out the Bells for Christmas" in The New Canadian Hymnal In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

1830 - 1915 Person Name: John S. D. Hodges Composer of "BELLS" in The New Canadian Hymnal Born: 1830, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Died: May 1, 1915, Baltimore, Maryland. Buried: Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Son of composer Edward Hodges, John emigrated to America in 1845, and attended Columbia University and the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Ordained an Episcopal minister in 1854, he served at the Grace/Second Episcopal Church, Newark, New Jersey (1860-70), and was Rector of St. Paul’s, Baltimore, Maryland, for 35 years. E. A. Washburn

1819 - 1881 Author of "Ring out the bells for Christmas" in The Church Hymnal Washburn, Edward Abiel, D.D., was born April 16, 1819; graduated at Harvard, 1838; studied theology at Andover and New Haven, and entered the Congregational ministry. In 1844, having been ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church, he became Rector of St. Paul's, Newburyport, Mass., where he remained till 1851. Spending 1851-52 in Europe, on his return he became Rector of St. John's, Hartford, 1853-62, and Professor of Church Polity in Berkeley Divinity School, Middletown, Connecticut; also Rector of St. Mark's, Philadelphia, 1862-65; and Calvary, New York, 1865-81. He died Feb. 2, 1881. His works include Social Law of God, 1874, and translations of Latin hymns. A selection from his poems was published in New York in 1881.
