1810 - 1886 Person Name: Jonathan Bayley, 1810-1886 Author of "O Jesus, Lord and Savior" in The Cyber Hymnal Jonathan Bayley was born in Salford, England on July 22nd, 1810. At the age of 14, he began to attend the evening classes and joined the Sunday School at the New Jerusalem Temple. Until the age of 19 he was engaged at the Salford Iron Works. He became a preacher and served the Accrington Society. While there he started a night school and later opened schools at Holland-bank, and Waterloo. Dr. Bayley was with the Argyle Square Society for sixteen years. He died on May 12, 1886, in Kensington, London, England.
Dr. Bayley was chairman of the committee entrusted to compile a new hymnal for the Swedonborgian church
The result of their labors was published in 1880, as Hymns for the Use of The New Church signified by the New Jerusalem in the Revelation. Compiled by Older of the General Conference of The New Church in Great Britain. London: James Speirs, 1880. This collection contains 750 hymns. To it Dr. Bayley contributed 5 hymns. From this collection a selection for mission services was published in 1883.
