Ralph Vaughan Williams

1872 - 1958 Person Name: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Harmonizer of "SHIPSTON" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Through his composing, conducting, collecting, editing, and teaching, Ralph Vaughan Williams (b. Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England, October 12, 1872; d. Westminster, London, England, August 26, 1958) became the chief figure in the realm of English music and church music in the first half of the twentieth century. His education included instruction at the Royal College of Music in London and Trinity College, Cambridge, as well as additional studies in Berlin and Paris. During World War I he served in the army medical corps in France. Vaughan Williams taught music at the Royal College of Music (1920-1940), conducted the Bach Choir in London (1920-1927), and directed the Leith Hill Music Festival in Dorking (1905-1953). A major influence in his life was the English folk song. A knowledgeable collector of folk songs, he was also a member of the Folksong Society and a supporter of the English Folk Dance Society. Vaughan Williams wrote various articles and books, including National Music (1935), and composed numerous arrange­ments of folk songs; many of his compositions show the impact of folk rhythms and melodic modes. His original compositions cover nearly all musical genres, from orchestral symphonies and concertos to choral works, from songs to operas, and from chamber music to music for films. Vaughan Williams's church music includes anthems; choral-orchestral works, such as Magnificat (1932), Dona Nobis Pacem (1936), and Hodie (1953); and hymn tune settings for organ. But most important to the history of hymnody, he was music editor of the most influential British hymnal at the beginning of the twentieth century, The English Hymnal (1906), and coeditor (with Martin Shaw) of Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). Colin Gibson

b. 1933 Composer of "BLESSING" in Alleluia Aotearoa Colin Gibson (b. 1933) was born in Dunedin, the south island of New Zealand. He has been writing hymn texts and hymn settings for over 20 years. His works have been published and performed in Africa, the United States, Asia and Australasia, Great Britain and Europe. He is organist and director of the Mornington Methodist Choir, Dunedin, New Zealand, a lay preacher, and retired in 1999 as Head of the Department and Donald Collie Professor of English at the University of Otago where he currently heads the Department of Theatre Studies and continues to lecture on English Literature as Emeritus Professor. He has conducted numerous hymn workshops in New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, and has been co-editor of a number of hymn collections. His frequent collaboration with Shirley Erena Murray is represented in several Hope publications, and he has his own published collections of hymns: Singing Love (Collins) and more recently Reading the Signature (Hope, 1994 - Code #1753) and Songs for a Rainbow People (Hope, 1998 - Code #8005). Henry J. Gauntlett

1805 - 1876 Adapter of "STUTTGART" in The United Methodist Hymnal Henry J. Gauntlett (b. Wellington, Shropshire, July 9, 1805; d. London, England, February 21, 1876) When he was nine years old, Henry John Gauntlett (b. Wellington, Shropshire, England, 1805; d. Kensington, London, England, 1876) became organist at his father's church in Olney, Buckinghamshire. At his father's insistence he studied law, practicing it until 1844, after which he chose to devote the rest of his life to music. He was an organist in various churches in the London area and became an important figure in the history of British pipe organs. A designer of organs for William Hill's company, Gauntlett extend­ed the organ pedal range and in 1851 took out a patent on electric action for organs. Felix Mendelssohn chose him to play the organ part at the first performance of Elijah in Birmingham, England, in 1846. Gauntlett is said to have composed some ten thousand hymn tunes, most of which have been forgotten. Also a supporter of the use of plainchant in the church, Gauntlett published the Gregorian Hymnal of Matins and Evensong (1844). Bert Polman

Christian Friedrich Witt

1660 - 1717 Person Name: C. F. Witt Composer (attributed to) of "STUTTGART" in The United Methodist Hymnal Christian F. Witt (b. Altenburg, Germany, d. 1660; d. Altenburg, 1716) was an editor and compiler of Psalmodia Sacra (1715); about 100 (of the 774) tunes in that collection are considered to be composed by him, including STUTTGART, which was set to the text "Sollt' es gleich." Robert A. Hobby

b. 1962 Composer of "LYDIA’S SONG" in Break Forth in Joyous Song Robert A. Hobby currently serves as Director of Music for Trinity English Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his responsibilities include playing for many of the worship services, overseeing the graded choral program, and managing the concerts the church offers. Numerous activities during his tenure include Trinity Church establishing a choral series with seventeen composers commissioned thus far, hosting a regional convention of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, producing four recordings, and expanding the opportunities for music ministry. Mr. Hobby received his Bachelor's Degree in Church Music from Wittenberg University in 1985 and a Master's Degree in Organ Performance from the University of Notre Dame in 1987. His organ teachers have included Darwin Leitz, Kirby and Kristi Koriath, Donald Busarow, and Craig Cramer. His private study in composition has been under Donald Busarow and Richard Hillert. He has had private coaching in improvisation with Paul Manz and compositional coaching from English composer, Andrew Carter. To date, most of his composition time has been spent writing commissions for churches and organizations throughout the country. Over 150 of Mr. Hobby?s compositions are in print with Augsburg Fortress Publishing House, Choristers Guild, Concordia Publishing House, G.I.A. Publishers, MorningStar Music Publishers, Northwestern Publishers, Pavane Publishing Co., and Warner Brothers Publishers. His music has been heard on nationally syndicated radio programs such as The Lutheran Hour, Pipe Dreams, and Sing for Joy. A representation of his writing for organ, choral, and instrumental forces can be found on Thine Is the Glory, a recording produced by MorningStar Publishers. In 2006, Mr. Hobby premiered a major work of his entitled "The Good Shepherd" which is scored for tenor solo, adult and children's choirs, and orchestra; it is published with MorningStar Music Publishers. His compositions are present in two hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship and Lutheran Service Book. As a performer and clinician, Mr. Hobby keeps an active schedule throughout the United States. He has played for the national conventions of the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, Organ Historical Society, and National Pastoral Musicians, and he has played for both national and regional conventions of the Association of the Lutheran Church Musicians and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He has been a featured artist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, performing Poulenc's Organ Concerto and Haydn's Organ Concerto #2 in C. In 2005, he conducted the premiere performance of Andrew Carter's Concerto in C for organ and orchestra with David Higgs at the organ. In addition, his workshops for both regional conventions and individual chapter meetings of the American Guild of Organists and other similar organizations have gathered wide acclaim. Mr. Hobby is a member of a number of professional music organizations and has held a variety of leadership positions. For several years he chaired Young Lutherans Sing, a national summer choral program for children, sponsored by the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. In 1996, he designed and coordinated a hymn festival that was performed simultaneously at 100 sites around the United States and Canada to commemorate the 10th anniversary of ALCM. He has also served as Dean of the Fort Wayne American Guild of Organists and as a member of the Program Committee for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. 1823 - 1895 Person Name: William Smith Rockstro Arranger of "OMNI DIE DIC MARIA" in Sing a New Creation William Rockstro (Composer, Arranger) Born: January 5, 1823 - North Cheam, Surrey (baptisized at Modern Church), England Died: July 2, 1895 - London, England The English composer and writer on music, William Smith [Smyth] Rockstro (originally: Rackstraw), was distinguished as a student of modal music and an important contributor to the Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians. The form of his surname by which he was known was an older style resumed after 1846. He was successively pupil of John Purkis, the blind organist, of Sterndale Bennett, and at the Leipzig Conservatorium, where he studied from I845 to 1846. He enjoyed the special friendship and tuition of Felix Mendelssohn, and was with Moritz Hauptmann for theory and with Plaidy for pianoforte. For some years after his return to England, William Rockstro was active as a teacher and performer in London, being regular accompanist at the 'Wednesday concerts,' where Braham and other eminent singers were to be heard. At this period he wrote his most popular and beautiful song, Queen and huntress; and his pianoforte editions of classical and other operas led the way in popularising that class of music in an available form for the use of those who could not read full scores; and in his indications of the orchestral instruments above the music-staves he did much to point the way towards a general appreciation of orchestral colour. In the early 1860's he left London for Torquay on account of his mother's health and his own, and on her death in 1876 he became a Roman Catholic. William Rockstro had been organist and honorary precentor at All Saints' Church, Babbacombe, from 1867, and won a high position as a teacher. Re published, with T. F. Ravenshaw, a Festival Psalter, adapted to the Gregorian Tones, in 1863, and Accompanying Harmonies to the Ferial Psalter in 1869. These were the first fruits of his assiduous study of ancient music, on which he became the first authority of his time in England. A couple of textbooks on harmony (1881) and counterpoint (1882) had a great success, and in the latter part of the first edition of the Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians he wrote a large number of articles on musical archaeology generally. Later research has superseded his, but at the time he wrote, his contributions to such subjects as the music of the period which closed in 1600 were important. He was too ardent a partisan to be an ideal historian, but his History of Music for Young Students (1879) and his larger work, A General History of Music (1886), contain much that is of permanent value. His Life of Handel (1883) and Mendelssohn (1884) are fine examples of eulogistic biography, though they are hardly to be recommended as embodying a calmly critical estimate of either composer. In his larger History he showed that he was, nevertheless, not above owning himself in the wrong, and his recantation of certain excessive opinions expressed by him in the Dictionary against Wagner's later works was due to true moral courage. He conducted a concert of sacred music of the 16th and 17th centuries at the Inventions Exhibition of 1885, and in 1891 gave up Torquay for London, giving lectures at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music, and holding a class to counterpoint and plain-song at the latter institution. As a singing-master and teacher of the pianoforte his method of imparting instruction was remarkably successful. As a composer, William Rockstro never quite freed himself from the powerful influences engendered by his studies: the lovely madrigal, "O too cruel fair," was judged unworthy of a prize by the Madrigal Society on the ground that it was modelled too closely on Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina; and his oratorio, The Good Shepherd, produced at the Gloucester Festival of 1886 under his own direction, was found to bear too many traces of Mendelssohnian influence to deserve success. In 1891 he collaborated with Canon Scott Holland in writing the life of his old friend, Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt; an abbreviated edition came out in 1863, and with Otto Goldschmidt he wrote still a shorter book, Jenny Lind, her Vocal Art and Culture (partly reprinted from the biography). For many years his health had been bad, and he had many adverse circumstances to contend with. He fought bravely for all that he held best in art, and boundless enthusiasm carried him through.
