William Watkins Reid

1923 - 2007 Person Name: William W. Reid, Jr. Hymnal Number: 1 Author of "O God of Every Nation" in Twelve New World Order Hymns William W. Reid, Jr. (1923-2007), after graduating from Oberlin College and Seminary and Yale Divinity School served for more than fifty years as pastor in the Wyoming Conference in rural and inner-city Methodist churches. He served on the Executive Committee of The Hymn Society of America. He was involved in social issues, serving as a councilman and county commissioner. His hymns are widely published in hymnals of many denominations. Mary Louise VanDyke =============================== William W. He is a graduate of the Yale Divinity School and Oberlin College. He served during World War II in the Medical Corps and was held prisoner by the Germans for eight months. Melchior Teschner

1584 - 1635 Hymnal Number: 1 Composer of "ST. THEODULPH" in Twelve New World Order Hymns Melchior Teschner (b. Fraustadt [now Wschowa, Poland], Silesia, 1584; d. Oberpritschen, near Fraustadt, 1635) studied philosophy, theology, and music at the University of Frankfurt an-der-Oder and later studied at the universities of Helmstedt and Wittenberg, Germany. From 1609 until 1614 he served as cantor in the Lutheran church in Fraustadt, and from 1614 until his death he was pastor of the church in Oberpritschen. Bert Polman

Mary Jackson Cathey

b. 1926 Hymnal Number: 3 Author of "God Almighty, God Eternal" in Twelve New World Order Hymns Mary Jackson Cathey (b. 1926) was born in Florence, SC, and educated at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC. She received an advanced degree from Union Seminary - Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond. As a Christian Educator she finds hymn text writing a profound way to express her faith. Her hymns have won contests sponsored by The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and a number of her poems have been published by John Knox Press, The Pilgrim Press, and Hope Publishing. She has four hymns to her credit in The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990) and others published by Selah Press, Choristers Guild, and Zimbel Press. She formerly served in a similar capacity in the First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, South Carolina. She obtained her M.R.E. degree from the Assembly's Training School, Richmond, Virginia, in 1953; and her A.B. from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1947. Ernest K. Emurian

1912 - 2004 Hymnal Number: 5 Author of "God of the Past, the Present and the Future" in Twelve New World Order Hymns Born: February 20, 1912, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Died: January 23, 2004, Alexandria, Virginia. Buried: Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Son of an Armenian immigrant pastor, Emurian attended Davidson College, North Carolina (BA); Union Theological Seminary, Virginia (BD); and Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey (ThM). Randolph-Macon College of Virginia also conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on him in 1971. Emurian served as pastor of the Cherrydale United Methodist Church, Arlington, Virginia, for 19 years, until retiring in 1981. He wrote some 19 books and 60 hymns, as well as hymn tunes, anthems, and popular songs. Emurian is pastor of the Elm Avenue Methodist Church, Portsmouth, Virginia. He has served several pastorates in the Methodist Church, chiefly in Virginia. He has long been interested in hymns, and has written several of them, including "When Dawns the Morning Sunlight" in the "Fourteen New Rural Hymns" published by the Society in 1955. She is the mother of five children, has a number of grandchildren, is the author of two books and numerous poems. Her hymn "God of the ages by whose hand", published by the Hymn Society of America in 1958, will appear in the forthcoming new edition of The Methodist Hymnal. Mrs. Burrowes, an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church, has recently affiliated with The South Berkeley Community Church, an inter-racial Church which is doing a deeply dedicated and inspiring work. Mrs. Burrowes wrote the Anniversary Hymn, "Almighty God, we pray thee still to guide us", for its celebration in 1964. Her married name is Mrs. Paul deNyse Burrowes. Methodist. Parents were William Reid, a native of Moneymore, near Belfast, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry. Came to the United States in 1900. Attended New York University (bachelor's degree, 1915; master's degree in journalism, 1917). Served The Hymn Society as President, Executive Director, and Editor of The Hymn from 1966 to 1976. Authored the Hymn Society's 40th anniversary history, Sing with Spirit and Understanding. Also edited The Pastor's Journal for the Methodist church and worked as its director of the News Service of the Board of Missions.
