Frank von Christierson

1900 - 1996 Hymnal Number: 9 Author of "As Men of Old Their First Fruits Brought" in Ten New Stewardship Hymns Frank von Christierson (1900-1996) was born near Helsinki, Finland. He attended San Jose (California) High School, Stanford University (BA, Psychology, 1923), and San Francisco Theological Seminary (BD 1929). In 1983 he was awarded the citation of distinguished alumnus, and became a Fellow of The Hymn Society. He has served as youth director at First Presbyterian Church, San Luis Obispo, and pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Citrus Heights, California. He has published a hymnal collection entitled Make a Joyful Noise (1987) and is represented in many hymnals. Three of his hymn texts have been included in the new Hope hymnal Worship & Rejoice (2001). http://www.hopepublishing.com/html ========================= After serving for thirty-seven years as a minister of the United Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, North Hollywood and Sacramento, California, Rev. Frank con Christierson has retired to serve as "Interim minister" in the Central Area of the Synod of California. He has been moderator of San Francisco Presbytery and of Los Angeles Presbytery, and has just completed three years as chairman of radio and television for the Sacramento Area Council of Churches. Born in Finland, he was brought to America as a boy of four. He is a graduate of Stanford University and of San Francisco Theological Seminary. Robert Lansing Edwards

1915 - 2006 Hymnal Number: 3 Author of "God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" in Ten New Stewardship Hymns Robert Lansing Edwards was born in Auburn, NY on 5 August 1915. He graduated from Princeton University in 1937. He earned an MA in history from Harvard University in 1938, and a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological University in 1949. He was minister at First Congregational Church, Litchfield, Conn. for 7 years and was minister at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford, Conn. from 1956 until 1980. He was active in establishing low income senior housing, in prison ministry and with other community endeavors. He wrote several hymn texts as well as four books including Of Singular Genius, Of Singular Grace, a biography of Horace Bushnell, a famous pastor from Hartford; and his autobiography My Moment in History. William Watkins Reid

1890 - 1983 Hymnal Number: 8 Author of "Give Thanks, My Soul, for Harvest" in Ten New Stewardship Hymns Reid, William Watkins, Sr. (Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, October 15, 1890--February 18, 1983, Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania). Methodist. Parents were William Reid, a native of Moneymore, near Belfast, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry. Came to the United States in 1900. Attended New York University (bachelor's degree, 1915; master's degree in journalism, 1917). Served The Hymn Society as President, Executive Director, and Editor of The Hymn from 1966 to 1976. Authored the Hymn Society's 40th anniversary history, Sing with Spirit and Understanding. Also edited The Pastor's Journal for the Methodist church and worked as its director of the News Service of the Board of Missions. Also: Caulfield, Benjamin. --From DNAH Archives ============================== William Watkins Reid, of Whitestone, Long Island, was president of the Hymn Society of America from 1942 to 1945, and is now a member of its Executive Committee. Used the title of "My God is There, Controlling," the Society has published 65 of his hymns, and several others were published in the Society's "searches", for new hymns. He was educated at the College of Wooster (B.A., 1952), Columbia University (M.A., 1954), and Union Theological Seminary (D.S.M., 1964). He taught at the University of South Dakota (1959-1962), Oklahoma Baptist University (1962-1964), and Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. A composer of choral and instrumental music, and an author of articles and reviews in music journals. --William J. Edward Krusen Ziegler

Held many pastorates as well as posts in the Church of the Brethren; missionary in India, 1931-1939; Director of Evangelism, 1951-1955; Moderator, 1959-1960. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ========================= Edward Krusen Ziegler is pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Oakton, Virginia. This is the sixth pastorate which he has held in his denomination. In addition to his service in the pastorate, he has held important and varied posts in the Church of the Brethren: Missionary in India 1931-1939; Director of Evangelism 1951-1955; Moderator 1959-1960. He is the author of several books and the 250th Anniversary Hymn of his denomination. He is also the author of one of the Hymn Society's Stewardship Hymns. He is editor of Brethren Life and Thought. 1904 - 2004 Hymnal Number: 2 Author of "O God, Thy Hand the Heavens Made" in Ten New Stewardship Hymns Cross, Frank LeRoy. (Oklahoma, 1904- ). Evangelical United Brethren. Graduated from United Theological Seminary, Dayton. Pastor in Oklahoma, editor of Lorenz Publishing Co., Dayton. Winner of the Hymn Society of America contest for hymns based on the Bible, with "Go forth, strong word of God," issued at the time of the introduction of the Revised Standard Version. Has written other hymns for various denominations. --Ellen Jane Lorenz, DNAH Archives ========================= Frank Cross is a member of the faculty of Bonebrake Theological Seminary, an institution of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. He is a graduate of Oklahoma City University and had theological training at Bonebrake Seminary. He was the pastor of the First United Brethren Church in Oklahoma City from 1934 to 1946. He has written a number of hymns for the services of his own congregation, and some of these have been used elsewhere. Director of Christian Education for the Baptist Union of Western Canada, 1938-1942; editor, Canadian Baptist Sunday School Publications, 1942-1948; general secretary of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec, 1948-1955; secretary-treasurer, Baptist Federation of Canada, 1955-1959; vice-president, Acadia University, 1959-1961; president, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, 1961-1967; retired to Amherst, N.S. His books and articles deal mostly with liturgical topics, except for his autobiography, Unforgettable Encounters, which he published privately in 1974. --Hugh D. Served as Director of United Church Men in the National Council of Churches. Previously National Program Director of the Boy Scouts of America. Graduated from the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy and attended Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ============================= E. Urner Goodman recently retired as Director of United Church Men in the National Council of Churches where he had served since its organization. Previous to that for twenty years he was National Program Director of the Boy Scouts of America. Born in Philadelphia in 1891, he was graduated from the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy and attended Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. He early identified himself with Christian work and was active in the Men and Religion Forward Movement in his young manhood. Before coming to the National Council of Churches he was active as a Presbyterian layman and helped to organize the National Council of Presbyterian Men. He is the author of the hymn "Christ Calls the Sons of Men," which was introduced during Church Men's Week in 1953. --Fourteen New Rural Hymns, 1955.
