W. Elmo Mercer

1932 - 2020 Hymnal Number: d1 Author of "He's wonderful" in Jewels Six William Elmo Mercer wrote more than 1,600 songs and worked extensively as a music arranger. Arguably his best known song is “Each Step I Take." Mercer worked for the John T. Benson company from 1951 to 1981 as a music editor. He also consulted for LifeWay, Lorenz, Brentwood, and other music companies. He and his wife Marcia traveled as singing evangelists for three decades and he served as the music minister for Scottsboro First Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. John T. Benson

1861 - 1930 Hymnal Number: d4 Author of "Do you know my Jesus" in Jewels Six Mr. John T. Benson, Sr. was born on February 19, 1861 in the Edgefield community in east Nashville and was brought up in the Tulip Street Methodist Church where his father was a charter member. John T. and his wife were involved in the founding of an independent holiness church that later became the Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Benson served as minister of music, first in the mission and then in the Church. The Bensons wrote some gospel songs, but their greatest contribution was in the publishing and distribution of song books and hymnals. He founded the John T Benson Publishing Company in Nashville. Frank M. Graham

1859 - 1931 Hymnal Number: d22 Author of "We will sing and preach holiness" in Jewels Six Born: March 1, 1859, Birmingham, Illinois. Died: August 25, 1931, Greensboro, Georgia. Buried: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Greensboro, Georgia. Graham was an ordained minister in the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church and served as District Superintendent in northern Georgia from around 1895 to about 1915.
