Kerr attended the University of Toronto and Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ordained a Presbyterian minister, he pastored in Kansas and Illinois, and at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh (1913-1946). A pioneer in religious broadcasting, his 1922 Christmas Day sermon was broadcast to the North and South Poles by radio station KDKA. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1930, helped compile the Presbyterian Hymnal in 1933, the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship, and helped found Worldwide Communion Sunday.
