William Henry Gladstone

1840 - 1891 Person Name: William H. Gladstone Hymnal Number: 3 Composer of "OMBERSLEY" in Three Hymns of Christian Faith and Dedication Born: June 3, 1840, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. Died: July 4, 1892, Westminster, London, England. Eldest son of British prime minister William Gladstone, William attended Eton College and read Greek and Latin at Christ Church College, Oxford University. A Member of Parliament for a total of 20 years, representing Chester for 3; Whitby, Yorkshire for 12; and East Worcestershire for 5. A singer and organist, he was well versed in musical history, especially the development of Anglican church music. He wrote on musical topics, and one of the views he expressed was that choral church services were to be deplored because "the choirs often discourage the congregations from singing." He wrote the anthems "Gracious and Righteous" and "Withdraw Not Thou", & chants, anthems, introits & organ voluntaries. Hugh Thomson Kerr

1871 - 1950 Hymnal Number: 3 Author of "Come, Thou my Light, that I may see" in Three Hymns of Christian Faith and Dedication Hugh Thomson Kerr (1872-1950) Born: February 11, 1872, Elora, Canada. Died: June 27, 1950, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Buried: Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Kerr attended the University of Toronto and Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ordained a Presbyterian minister, he pastored in Kansas and Illinois, and at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh (1913-1946). A pioneer in religious broadcasting, his 1922 Christmas Day sermon was broadcast to the North and South Poles by radio station KDKA. Seth Bingham

1882 - 1972 Hymnal Number: 1 Composer of "MADISON AVENUE" in Three Hymns of Christian Faith and Dedication Seth Daniel Bingham was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1904 from Yale. He then studied organ and composition in Paris from 1906-1907 and returned to Yale and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1908. He became organist and choirmaster at Rye Presbyterian Church in New York and also began teaching music at Yale. He taught at Yale for 12 years and then was on the music faculty at Columbia University. He was organist and music director at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City for 35 years. He composed may choral and organ works with a religious theme, as well as secular music for orchestra, chamber groups, and choruses.
