J. Wilbur Chapman

1859 - 1918 Author of "One Day He's Coming" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Rv John Wilbur Chapman DD LLD USA 1859-1918. Born in Richmond, IN, he attended Quaker Day School and Methodist Sunday school. At age 17 he made a public declaration of his Christian faith and joined the Richmond Presbyterian Church. He received his seminary degree from Lane Theoloical Seminary, Cincinnati, OH. He was later awarded a Doctorate in Divinity from the College of Wooster, and an LL.D. from Heidelberg University. In 1882 he married Irene Steddon. They had a daughter. His wife died in 1886. In 1888 he married Agnes Pruyn Strain, and they had four children. His second wife died in 1907. In 1910 he married Mabel Cornelia Moulton. He held six pastorates in OH, IN, NY, PA, NY, NY before becoming an evangelist, generally traveling with gospel singer, Charles Alexander. In 1893 he preached with D. L. Moody. Billy Sunday was one of his disciples on the circuit. In 1895 he was appointed Corresponding Secretary of the Presbyterian General Assembly's Committeee on Evangelism, overseeing activities of 51 evangelists in 470 cities. He developed campaign tactics to maximize evangelical successes, trying them first in Pittsburgh, then Syracuse. With funding from philanthropist, John H. Converse, a wealthy Presbyterian, Chapman joined with Alexander to launch evangelical campaigns in 1907. He assembled 21 evangelistic teams after that to cover 42 sections of Philadelphia, preaching for several weeks. 8000 conversions resulted. They repeated this in NC. In 1909 they started a worldwide campaign in Vancouver, BC, and took in cities in Australia, the Phillipines, China, Korea, and Japan. Chapman also held religious summer conferences at Winona Lake, IN, Montreat, NC, and Long Island, NY. Mass evangelism was losing favor in 1910, so he was back holding large revivals with Alexander in 1912. He was also elected moderator of the Presbyterian Church General Assembly, and under so much stress, he developed gall stones. The surgery was too much, and he died two days later. Chas. H. Marsh

1885 - 1956 Person Name: Charles H. Marsh Composer of "CHAPMAN" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Born: April 8, 1886, Magnolia, Iowa. Died: April 12, 1956, La Jolla, California. Buried: Riverview Cemetery, Brawley, California. Marsh’s father was pastor of the Congregational Church in Magnolia, Iowa. His gift for the piano was evident at an early age, and after he graduated from high school, Wilbur Chapman asked him to play for the Winona Lake Chautauqua and Bible Conference in Indiana. He later taught at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (1915-19) and the University of Redlands (1919-26). He studied music in France in the 1920’s, and became president of the European School of Music and Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana. From 1928 to 1932, he played the organ at the First Presbyterian Church. In 1932, he moved to Florida to become professor of organ at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and to serve as organist and choir director at the First Baptist Church. In 1935, he moved to California, where he worked as district supervisor for the Federal Music Project in San Diego until 1939. He also played the organ and directed the choir at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla (1936-56). Enrique Turrall

1867 - 1953 Person Name: E. T. Translator of "Un Día" in El Nuevo Himnario Popular (Edicion Revisada y Corregida) Enrique S. Turrall worked in Spain. He saw a need for hymns that expressed life's emotional experiences. He wrote and translated hymns for funerals, weddings and other special occasions. Joan Larie Sutton

1930 - 2016 Translator of "Um Dia" in Hinário para o Culto Cristão Joan Larie Sutton (nee Riffey) was born in Louisville, KY but lived most of her life in Brazil with her missionary parents. She began the study of violin at the age of ten, continuing her studies at Baylor University. She earned a Masters Degree in sacred music at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. She married William Boyd Sutton and together they worked in Brazil. She translated many hymns into Portuguese. ================ JOAN SUTTON LARIE (Married to Pastor John Boyd Sutton) Brazilian Baptists owe much to this American musician who, after more than 30 years of fruitful work in Brazil (see: "Nassau", p.l66). was the catalyst for musical talent, natives and aliens in the preparation of "Hymns for Christian Worship," which contributed to the translations, which revealed hymns by contemporary authors. http://www.abordo.com.br/nassau/galeria.htm
